Bernice Evelyn Ramsey, 92, died Thursday, July 17 at The Stratford at Beyer Park in Modesto.

Born Oct. 28, 1921 to Carl and Lenna Ladd in Hilmar, she was a 1938 graduate of Hilmar High School and attended nursing school in Stockton. She returned to Hilmar and graduated from Modesto Junior College. Upon graduation she enlisted in the United States Navy as a member of the WWII Naval Air Corps. While serving in the Navy she met her husband Jack Ramsey. The couple was married on Jan. 6, 1945.

From 1946 to 1952 the couple welcomed three children to their family Carl, Alan and Judi. The family moved to Oakdale in 1965.

Bernice was a life member of the Honor Society of MJC and the PTA. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church, Women’s Fellowship, Council of Ministries, Native Daughters of the Golden West (past president), Order of the Eastern Star and Special Ladies of the Shrine. She volunteered countless hours to Oakdale’s Community Sharing and was Volunteer of the Year in 2000.

Survivors include her son, Alan Ramsey of California; daughter, Judi (Ed) Tergeson of Colorado; granddaughter Erica (Bob) Rhoad of Virginia, grandson Clint (Ashleigh) Tergeson of Virginia; and two great granddaughters, Lark and Helenne Tergeson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Ramsey, son Carl Ramsey, brothers Bob and John Ladd, and sister Pat Harrington.

Services were held Saturday, July 26 at Sherwood Bible Church, Modesto.
