Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 18.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.31/gallon as of Monday, Oct. 16, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 3.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 54.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 6.8 cents in the last week and stands at $4.41 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.93/gallon while the most expensive was $5.99, a difference of $1.06/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.89 while the highest was $7.19, a difference of $3.30/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 11.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.55/gallon on Oct. 16. The national average is down 29.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 30.9 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.30/gallon, down 18.4 cents from last week’s $5.49; Oakland - $5.57, down 14.6 cents from $5.71; and San Jose - $5.45/gallon, down 17.3 cents per gallon from last week’s $5.63.

“The downward momentum has indeed gained steam, with the national average declining over the last week with again virtually every village, town, city, region and state seeing gasoline prices fall – with the added bonus that diesel prices have also declined,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “For now, the national average is likely to soon fall to its lowest level in six months. I believe the national average still has some 15 to 35 cents of declining to do the way things stand now.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back ten years show the highest price in Modesto registered last year, when it was $5.85 per gallon on Oct. 16, 2022; the highest U.S. average price was also a year ago, when it was $3.86 per gallon. The lowest Modesto price was $2.56 per gallon, on Oct. 16, 2016 and the lowest U.S. average price was logged on Oct. 16, 2020 when the price came in at $2.16 per gallon.
