Sometimes, on very rare occasions, in gathering information to include in the Valley Home News, we receive such a bonanza of news items to share with our readers that we are unable to include all of it in the column. Last week was just such an occasion and we would like to include those items in this week’s column.
We received word that Kathy Bryhni was recognized on the last day of school, for her many years of volunteer service at Valley Home School as the school librarian. She was awarded with a plaque and gift for her work in that position. Kathy’s work is very much appreciated by all the Valley Home students, teachers and parents!
A paper airplane contest was held among the 4-8th grade students on the last day of school just before the Honor Roll Assembly. Lots of action in the Multi-purpose Room as students poured lots of effort in creating their entry. Let’s hear it for the winner, Samantha Kerns, whose creation traveled nearly the length of the gym! Next step for Samantha could very well be representing Valley Home at NASA!
We also received word that Callie Chrisman won the Kindergarten Reading Award for doing the most reading during the school year. Congratulations to Callie on a good job and also the Anderson twins who shared second place in reading!

Looking for great food and an afternoon with friends and neighbors and an opportunity to latch onto some great plants, baskets of goodies and special items of interest? Oakdale Garden Club members who are also Valley Home residents invite you to attend the club’s annual Salad Bar Luncheon on June 21 at the Gene Bianchi Community Center in Oakdale. Tickets for the luncheon are priced at $5 a person and may be obtained from any Garden Club member or at the door. A table reserved for eight persons may be obtained for $10 extra. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. I know you will enjoy the lunch and have fun at this event because I have been to them each year for 36 years.

Last week’s news column had been submitted when we received word of a possible mountain lion or cougar sighting at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Sawyer Avenue in the evening on Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend. The indications of the sighting of the animal were very strong but a follow up investigation by the game warden on Tuesday ends with his statement that there was not enough concrete evidence to warrant setting a trap for the animal. The word is for residents to be extremely careful in late evenings and early mornings as those who saw it believe it is real. Be careful and avoid any injury. Our Neighborhood Watch style of communication system with our residents works. Within 48 hours we had received four notices of the sighting.

Following the decennial Census, Stanislaus County’s district populations must be revisited in order to make all five districts as equal as possible. Evaluation has started to see where the new district lines should be drawn. Residents are encouraged to attend any of the six public meetings spread over the county to help in the discussion of the redistricting of the County’s Supervisorial Districts. The June 14th meeting from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Riverbank’s Scout Hall, 3017 High St., looks like the closest to our location. For more information call (209) 525-6333.

This reporter wants to remind all residents that the new Valley Home Community Center Park will be dedicated on Saturday, June 18, just ten days from now. This is an event to remember. The new redwood encased black granite sign has been installed. It gives a brief history of the historic Thalheim Literary & Social (later Valley Home) Clubhouse along with information on the park. Mark your calendar, you do not want to miss this event.
