Valley Home 4-H is looking for the “Great Pumpkin” this Saturday at our Valley Home School Harvest Festival. Judges will be searching for the “Biggest Pumpkin,” “Strangest Shape Pumpkin” and the most Perfect Pumpkin.” We also understand that there will be a contest for the best “Carved Pumpkin!” Our community is in for a real treat this Saturday! So all of you pumpkin growers start searching your pumpkin patch for your special pumpkins and bring them to the school at 2:00 p.m. this Coming Saturday. Judging will take place during the Harvest Festival! You may drop off entries at 12501 Valley Home Road (Jenna’s house), Valley Home School or the Valley Home General Store. Congratulations are sent to Lainey Smith from all her Valley Home friends on receiving word that she placed second in the California High School Rodeo Association District 5 rodeo in Breakaway and placed 5th Overall in the Multidistrict Rodeo in Breakaway.

Lots of excitement in the air as the date for the Valley Home Fall Harvest Festival draws near. There will be lots of fun things to do and lots to see! Gussie up in your favorite Halloween costume and join the kids in their costume contest. There will be sack races, a picture booth to capture participants in their funniest, scariest, most colorful Halloween costume. Just a few of the many opportunities offered to have a great fun filled time at the Fall Harvest Festival. Visit the Silent Auction tables for an opportunity to take home a special souvenir of the evening. We have received word that new games have been set up to add to the evening and lots of prizes are being offered. There will be something for everyone young or old to enjoy! The event is being held on the grounds of the Pioneer Ave school campus and the festivities will begin at 4 p.m. this Saturday and last until 8 p.m.

Following the close of the Fall Harvest Festival at the school you are invited by Garret Bryni to amble down to 4149 Pleasant Valley Road for a stroll through the “Valley Home Haunted Cemetery” from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Enjoy shivers and thrills as you enjoy a spooky tour through the tombstones and a visit with cemetery inhabitants! To enjoy a romp through the tombstones, visitors are requested to bring a donation of one non-perishable food item. The item will be included in the Valley Home 4-H Holiday Food Baskets, which are donated by the club to local families. Just a reminder from Garret that visitors are warned to be aware of the fact that they just might run into some of the graveyard inhabitants—past and present!

Glenn and Laura Burghardt traveled to Modesto on Saturday afternoon to view a movie at the State Theatre entitled “Get Low” starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Bill Murray and Lucas Black. The movie had special interest for the couple as it captured an event which occurred with one of Laura’s Tennessee cousins, Felix “Bush” Breazeale. Bush was curious to see who would come to attend his funeral when he passed away so at age 74, he planned his service to be held while he was still alive and could enjoy it. He made his own coffin and sat beside it on a stage at the site of the two Cave Creek Baptist Churches (one Primitive, the other Missionary) in Roane Co, Tenn. on June 26, 1938. The Roane County Banner leaked the news to the outside world and the power of the press spread the news nation-wide. Life magazine photographed the event which ranged from 8 to 12,000 people attending with cars from at least 14 states were backed up for two miles from the site. It was quite a flourishing business for soft drink and hot dog vendors and a local farmer who rented his nearby field for parking at 25 cents per car. The film changed a few details of the event, but it was still a great story!
