Student Rep Tolboe Leads Final Meeting

It was a night of acknowledgment and reports as the Oakdale Joint Unified School Board gathered for its monthly meeting Monday evening, May 9 at the OJUSD Tech center.

As is customary for the May meeting, student board member Brooklyn Tolboe led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. She was then presented with the gavel by President Diane Gilbert, so as to lead her final meeting of the 2021-22 school year.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Dave Kline addressed the board first, offering words of gratitude and praise for the outgoing student member.

“You persevered through very challenging times, but you did so with insight and a thoughtfulness that actually helped us out and helped us better serve our students,” Kline said to Tolboe as he thanked her for her service.

Board members additionally offered positive feedback to the student board member, each mentioning the nature of the year and her ability to do an exceptional job during unexceptional times.

President Gilbert noted the extreme difficulty of the time during which she was chosen as a representative, making mention of her poise, maturity and class under very difficult circumstances.

“You used proper discretion as to when to participate or not in school board meetings and activities,” Gilbert said to Tolboe. “You did an extraordinarily good job representing Oakdale students as a member of our board.”

Tolboe thanked the board for the opportunity as well as the experience.

During the session, the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) was presented to the board and aired in a public hearing, allowing for public comment or submission of additional comment, by Assistant Superintendent Gillian Wegener. Adoption of the LCAP will be completed at the June meeting.

Review and approval of a Completion Improvement Grant for both OJUSD and Oakdale Charter was also presented. Both were passed with requests for follow-up on details concerning transcript grades, when classes are repeated for a better grade.

Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources Craig Redman reviewed the ratification of the tentative agreement with the OJUSD Teacher’s Association as well as classified managers and confidential employees. There was no comment or question by the board.

An update was providing on the upcoming graduations across the district. The following graduations are scheduled: Oakdale Charter, May 25, 5 p.m., Cloverland Multipurpose Room; East Stan/Valley Oak, May 25, 7 p.m., Oakdale High School; Oakdale Junior High, May 26, 7 p.m., OHS Corral and Oakdale High School, May 27, 7 p.m., OHS Corral.

The next OJUSD Board Meeting will be hosted on June 13 at the OJUSD Tech Center with open session beginning at 6:30 p.m.
