Warrior Project Proves Powerful
Stanislaus State graduate student and art teacher Sarah Graham’s thesis project focuses on art programs’ role in reducing recidivism rates and addressing social and emotional needs of former inmates. Drawing on her experiences as an art teacher at Sierra Conservation Center, a correctional facility in Tuolumne County, Graham partnered with the University’s Project Rebound, which provides support and resources to formerly incarcerated individuals who aspire to furthering their education. Graham and Project Rebound students created a metal sculpture of a phoenix, a mythical bird, featuring inspirational quotes from the program’s participants.
Trailblazing Physician
Pioneering physician Dr. Michael Brodie has experienced many significant “firsts.” He was the first African American to open a family practice in Turlock and the first African American doctor at Stanislaus State’s Student Health Center. Originally starting his career in pediatrics in 1976, Brodie came to the Central Valley after he answered an advertisement calling for physicians in Turlock. His dedication and inclusive approach to healthcare, combined with his support and promotion of higher education, made a significant impact in the community and the lives of many students.
Top Rating
Finance publication MONEY has released its 2023 college ratings and once again named Stanislaus State among the “Best Colleges in America.” Using a new star rating system that replaces its traditional numerical ranking, MONEY gave Stanislaus State 4.5 out of 5 stars, which places the University among the top third of the 736 four-year public and private colleges from across the nation that made the cut.
Alum Joins Peace Corps
The Peace Corps is resuming international deployments after a three-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Stanislaus State Class of 2021 alumnus Alec Austin is among the first wave of volunteers. Austin will head to Uganda where he will spend the next two years. “I’m looking forward to the experience,” Austin said. “The Peace Corps serves as an important resource for humanitarian efforts. It’s an incredible way to bring back knowledge of their culture and values to the United States.”
Ryan Among Major League Leaders
Former Stan State baseball standout Joe Ryan headed into this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Break in the top 15 in the majors in WHIP, strikeouts, and strikeouts per nine innings. Ryan takes the mound for the Minnesota Twins. Besides being named the California Collegiate Athletic Association's Most Valuable Pitcher in 2018, Ryan was the highest draft pick in Stan State’s baseball program history.
