The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Sept. 17 through Monday, Sept. 23. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, SEPT. 23
Battalion 2: 11:54 a.m. – Engine 23, Engine 24, Quint 22, and BC 2 were dispatched to reports of a vehicle accident with the occupants pinned inside the vehicle. Upon arrival Engine 23 found a two-vehicle accident, a semi-truck versus a pickup truck. Two patients were transported by ambulance.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 crews completed the weekly apparatus checks and yard maintenance.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 22
OES 4615 and BC Rice returned home from their out of county assignment on the Bridge Fire.
Battalion 2: 6:39 p.m. – Engine 21 was dispatched to a subject down with CPR in progress in the area of Riverside and Edgebrook. They arrived to find a retired firefighter performing CPR. ALS protocol was started, and the patient was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.
Battalion 5: 3:16 p.m. – Modesto Engine 27, Engine 28, Engine 29, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at Highway 108 and Orange Blossom Road. Engine 28 arrived on-scene with two vehicles involved and had two patients. Crews assisted with patient care on one immediate patient and one delayed patient; both patients were transported by ground ambulance to local hospitals. CHP is investigating the accident.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 21
OES 4615 and BC Rice continue to assist on the Bridge Fire. Crews are working 24- hour shifts and are working on control and containment lines.
Battalion 2: 4:53 p.m. – Water Rescues 24, 28, and Engine 23 were dispatched to the area of the Tuolumne River in Waterford for two subjects on a capsized boat. With the assistance of Air 101, crews located the outstanding people who were uninjured and did not need any assistance.
Battalion 5: Crews completed apparatus and station maintenance.
Crews trained on company level training.
5:43 p.m. – Modesto Engine 29 and BC5 responded to assist Cal Fire TCU with a vehicle accident at Highway 108 and Tulloch Road. Engine 29 assisted on-scene and BC5 was cancelled.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 20
BC Rice, OES 4615 (Modesto) and OES 339 (Turlock) continue mop up and patrol on the Bridge Fire in the area of the Angeles Crest highway and the Table Mountain campground.
Battalion 2: 10:19 a.m. – Engine 7 responded to a medical aid in Riverbank for a subject with difficulty breathing. Upon arrival, the subject was in cardiac arrest. E7 provided ALS care, and the patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Battalion 5: 5:45 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 27, and BC5 responded to a vehicle accident with injuries at Claus Road and Highway 108. Engine 26 arrived with two vehicles involved blocking both lanes of traffic. Crews provided care to two delayed patients; both patients were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. CHP is investigating.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 19
OES 4615 and one Chief Officer continue to assist with the Bridge Fire in Southern California.
Battalion 2: 3:26 p.m. – Stanislaus Consolidated and Modesto Fire Department units responded to reports of a working structure fire on Eighth Street in Riverbank. The first engine reported that a back bedroom was on fire. Crews initiated an interior fire attack. Upon entering and searching the room, several small kittens and two adult cats were rescued from the fire. Firefighters were able to treat all the cats using special pet oxygen masks that are carried on all MST fire apparatus. The quick action of the firefighters resulted in all cats and kittens being returned to their owners alive and well.
Battalion 5: 1:51 a.m. – E26 and BC5 responded to an assault with a deadly weapon on Claus Road in Riverbank. A male was struck in the head with a baseball bat and was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
Congratulations to Engine 27’s probationary firefighter Ryan Cumberland and Engine 28’s probationary firefighter Wesley Leijten who were successful in passing their 10-month tests on Wednesday and Thursday.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 18
Personnel from the Modesto Fire Department attended the Health and Wellness Benefits Fair and City of Modesto Employee Appreciation Luncheon held at Centre Plaza.
Battalion 2: Engine 26 preplanned river access for vegetation fires and river rescues.
Crews completed company level training and apparatus maintenance.
Battalion 5: 5 p.m. – Engine 28 attended the Oakdale High School Career Night and personnel were on hand to answer questions about careers in the fire service.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 17
An MST briefing was performed. The chief officers briefed the organization on current and upcoming projects.
Battalion 2: Crews completed station and engine maintenance.
