The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Aug. 6 through Monday, Aug. 12. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, AUG. 12
The training division worked on cleaning up the dozer and equipment after the fire pallet fire on Janopaul.
Battalion 2: Crews worked on weekly station and engine maintenance.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews trained on haz mat decontamination procedures and use of the four gas monitors.
Battalion 5 assisted with coverage and managing resources during the Seventh Street incident in Modesto.
11:28 a.m. – Engine 28 to Greger and Kaufman for a natural gas leak. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a construction crew hit a 2” natural gas line. They remained on scene as PG&E worked to shut down the line and reestablish service to the area.
SUNDAY, AUG. 11
Battalion 2: Crews cleaned up from several fires over the weekend.
Battalion 5: Companies completed daily apparatus and station maintenance.
1:24 p.m. – Engine 7, Engine 26 and Battalion Chief 5 were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident. Engine 7 arrived to find two vehicles involved with one minor injury. Engine 7 canceled the balance.
SATURDAY, AUG. 10
Battalion 2: 6:30 a.m. – Brush 24, Brush 23, Water Tender 23, and BC2 responded to Lake Road for a reported Vegetation Fire. Resources on scene were sufficient and the fire was measured at 3 acres.
Battalion 5: 6:33 p.m. – Engine 28, E27, E9, SSLE23, SSLE24, T5, BC5 and BC2 responded to a report of a working structure fire on H Street in Oakdale. Crews arrived on scene and found an AC unit on the side of the house on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no extension into the residence.
11:11 p.m. – Engine 29, E28 and BC5 responded to an ATV that had rolled over and landed on top of the driver. The patient was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
FRIDAY, AUG. 9
7:28 p.m. – Squad 11 (Modesto) was dispatched to the report of pallets on fire in the 600 block of Janopaul Lane. Squad 11 arrived to find a large volume of fire showing from a large pallet yard with fire extending into multiple exposure buildings. The response was quickly upgraded to a commercial structure response and second alarm assignment with crews working to limit fire extension into the adjacent exposures. The response included numerous Stanislaus County Fire Agencies, San Joaquin County Fire, CHP, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, MPD, American Medical Response, Stan OES/Cert, TID and PG&E. Crews remained on scene throughout the night completing overhaul operations.
Battalion 2: 3:30 p.m. – Brush 24, Brush 23, Grass 21, Water Tender 21 and 23, BC2 responded to Yosemite Boulevard at Lake for a vegetation fire with Cal Fire TCU. A two-acre fire was contained quickly by responding crews.
Battalion 5: Family and friends welcomed Engineer Chris Byrd home.
Engine 26, 27, 28 and 30 participated in EMS training provided by Medic 1.
4:28 p.m. – Water Rescue 29, Engine 28, Engine 27, and Battalion 5 were dispatched to the 11000 block of Frymire Road in Knights Ferry for a water rescue. Water Rescue 29 arrived and was able to assist the two stranded rafters. All other units were canceled.
THURSDAY, AUG. 8
Battalion 2: Engine 26, Engine 24, and Quint 22 trained at Pick-n-Pull on auto extrication sign offs.
9:11 p.m. – Quint 22, Engine 23 and BC2 responded to a three-vehicle accident on South Sante Fe Avenue. A total of four patients were identified initially. AMR assisted and CHP is investigating.
Battalion 5: Crews performed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Companies conducted training in their respective FMA’s.
Oakdale companies rotated out to the Stearns fire from the previous night to check for hot spots. Crews will continue to check the fire over the next couple of days.
Chief Presson and Firefighter Philipp, part of the Central Valley Incident Management team, continue to assist on the Park Fire.
Engine 27 and Truck 5 conducted engineer sign offs on reserve truck 205.
12:15 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Truck 5 and Battalion 5 responded to a potential structure fire in the 1200 block of Olive Avenue. BC5 arrived on scene with nothing showing and investigated. Crews checked all areas of the church, electrical panels and HVAC and were unable to locate a smell of smoke or any issues. The remainder of the balance was cancelled, and all fire units cleared.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 7
Battalion 2: 5:27 p.m. – A potential structure fire response was dispatched to the 4700 block of California Avenue. Engine 26 was the first to arrive and identified a light haze in the house. E23 assisted with checking the attic. The cause was determined to be an issue with the AC unit in the house. No fire.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews trained on ventilation techniques and 10-month test preparation at Station 17.
1:56 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Engine 29, and Battalion 5 to Sonora Road in Knights Ferry for a vehicle accident with pin in. Engine 29 arrived on scene to find a single vehicle vs. a bridge abutment with the roadway blocked. Firefighter/Paramedics treated one patient for minor injuries.
8:40 p.m. – Brush 28, Grass/Water Tender 27, Grass 26, Brush/Water Tender 23 and Battalion 5 to Stearns Road for a vegetation fire. First arriving crews found two to three acres of light flash fuel with a moderate rate of spread and one structure threatened. Firefighters went to work protecting the structure and utilizing the wildland engines to mobile attack the fire. Crews had the fire contained to 15 acres in 20 minutes and spent the next three hours on mop up.
TUESDAY, AUG. 6
Members of the apparatus committee performed the final inspection on the new Brush 1.
A badge pinning ceremony was held at fire administration for Deputy Chief Bickle.
MST Battalion Chiefs participated in a staff meeting at Station 1.
Battalion 2: Quint 22, Engines 21 and 24 participated in a LARRO drill in Station 26’s FMA.
Several crews attended National Night Out Events in their FMA.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Crews trained on ground ladders, low angle rope systems, patient packaging and Brush 28 operations.
11:27 a.m. – Engine 28 to Valley Home Road for a wire down call. Crews arrived on scene to find a low boy with a dozer that pulled wires down, bringing down a power pole with a transformer on it. Firefighters contained the oil from the transformer and secured the area until PG&E arrived.
Engine 29 attended the Valley Home National Night Out event.
Engine 27, Engine 28, Battalion 5 and Chief 2 attended several National Night Out events in the City of Oakdale. Firefighters were even able to help put out a BBQ that got a little too hot.
7:43 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 to West J Street for a potential structure fire, vegetation fire threatening a structure. While enroute, additional information was relayed that a shed was on fire. The call was upgraded to a working fire, bringing Engine 24, 26, 29 and Battalion 2. Crews arrived on scene to find a small vegetation fire that had minor extension into the shed. Engines 27 and 28 were able to quickly extinguish the fire and cancelled the balance.
