The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, July 11 through Monday, July 17. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JULY 17
Battalion 2: Training with new firefighters who are now doing job shadow time with the engine companies has begun.
12:01 p.m. – A working residential fire was dispatched in the 500 block of D Street in Waterford. Units arrived to find a fire behind the residence involving a shed, fence, and vegetation. There was a power line down between the residences that hampered overhaul efforts. The fire was contained to the yard, and no extension to the residence. The first three units remained on scene the balance of the response was canceled. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Battalion 5: Crews conducted training with firefighters that are preparing to take the Engineer Promotional Test.
SUNDAY, JULY 16
Crews conducted training at the RFTC with probationary firefighters in preparation for their upcoming test as well as engineer candidates for their upcoming test.
Battalion 2: Crews completed company training.
Station maintenance and EMS inventory was completed.
Battalion 5: 7:54 p.m. – Engine 27 responded for smoke in the area of Bluegrass Court in the City of Oakdale. Once in the area they found an exterior fire that had extended into the garage of the residence. The call was upgraded to a potential structure fire. Engine 28, Quint 22 and BC5 responded. The fire was knocked down by a residential sprinkler system inside the garage. Once any additional extension was ruled out, the remaining of the resources cancelled. The FIU responded for origin and cause of the fire. Before leaving Engine 27 assisted the homeowner with removing items from the garage that had water damage from the sprinklers and attempted to restore the sprinkler system to the house.
SATURDAY, JULY 15
Battalion 5: 12:45 p.m. – Engine 28, WR28, WR29, Escalon WR1-1 and BC5 responded to Jacob Myers Park for a report of multiple people stuck in the river and unable to get out. Three individuals were located in the park that had self-rescued. There were no injuries reported.
5:47 p.m. – E26, E27, Q22 and BC5 responded to Highway 108/Adams Gravel Plant Road for a vehicle rollover with pin in. One patient with minor injuries was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. OPD and CHP are investigating.
FRIDAY, JULY 14
Battalion 2: E26 and Q22 met at Station 26 to work on rope systems and air bags.
Station 26 received and installed a new dishwasher.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks, along with station maintenance.
Engine 27 had a future MFD firefighter stop by to see the engine.
Boat 28 conducted nighttime boat training at Woodward Reservoir.
3:31 p.m. – Engine 28 responded to Crackerbox Road for a medical aid, person under a tree. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the patient had self-extricated. They treated the patient for minor injuries and Oak Valley medics transported them to a local hospital for further treatment.
7:51 p.m. – Engine 28 and Battalion 5 to Sixth and E streets for a vehicle vs. pedestrian. Crews arrived on scene to find a pediatric patient that was struck by a vehicle. Firefighters treated and packaged the patient for transport. Ground medics transported the patient to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
THURSDAY, JULY 13
Battalion 2: Captains assessment test was held at HQ, there were two internal candidates and one external.
E26, E19, and Q22 conducted training at Station 17. Forced entry, ladders, vertical ventilation, and search were the topics covered.
2:34 a.m. – Engine 7, 26, Quint 22 and Battalion 5 responded to the 3100 block of Santa Fe Street in Riverbank for a potential structure fire. Engine 26 arrived on scene to find numerous burn spots around a business that were out. They confirmed no extension into the structure and requested the FIU to respond. The call is under investigation.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks, along with station maintenance.
Chief 2 and Battalion 5 attended the Oakdale Rural Fire District meeting in Knights Ferry.
6:28 p.m. – Engines 7, 26 and Battalion 5 responded to Oakdale and Claribel roads for a vehicle accident. Engine 7 arrived on scene to find three vehicles involved and the eastbound lanes of Claribel blocked. Crews treated and transported one patient to a local hospital with minor injuries.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 12
Battalion 2: 11:12 a.m. – A full wildland dispatch was sent to the 19000 block of Claribel Road. The first unit on scene reported a two-acre fire in the grass with a slow rate of spread. Cal Fire also sent a full wildland response including aircraft. The fire was contained in about 45 minutes and totaled 12 acres. Cal Fire prevention was on scene to determine the cause.
Battalion 5: 2:05 p.m. – Modesto Brush 29, Brush 28, Grass 27, Water Tender 27, Stanislaus Grass 26, and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire in the 15000 block of Sonora Road. Brush 29 arrived on scene to find an acre of dry grass that had burned that was surrounded by orchards. Brush 29 and Grass 26 mopped up the burned area and the responding balance was cancelled.
Battalion 5 attended the Valley Home Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) meeting.
TUESDAY, JULY 11
Members of the Hazardous Materials Response Team trained on hazard identification and monitoring.
Battalion 2: Three more members of the department began Paramedic School today as part of a FEMA Grant. The goal is to have 10 members certified by the end of 2025.
Annual flow testing of the SCBA’s has started.
Battalion 5: 9:30 a.m. – Engine 28, E29 and BC5 responded to a motor vehicle accident with rollover on Highway 4 east of Milton Road. Crews arrived and found one vehicle involved and the patient had self-extricated. Patient was transported to a local medical facility by ground ambulance.
