The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, June 6 through Monday, June 12. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JUNE 12
Battalion 5: Fire Station 27’s crew completed a station project of adding additional gear lockers to store all assigned personnel’s personal protective equipment.
3:41 p.m. – Engine 27, E28, and T5 responded to the 800 block of West F Street in Oakdale for a report of smoke coming from the attic. Units arrived on scene quickly and located a burnt belt on the AC unit. No fire, all units were released.
5:58 p.m. – Modesto Engine 7, Water Rescue 28, Stanislaus Water Rescue 24, and BC5 were dispatched to assist San Joaquin County in searching for a raft that was seen floating down the river with the occupants calling for help. After searching the river with help of Air 101 there was no raft or anyone in need of help located. All resources were then cleared from the incident.
SUNDAY, JUNE 11
Battalion 2: 5:31 p.m. – E26 responded to the intersection of Callander and Patterson for a solo motorcycle down. They arrived to find the rider had sustained minor injuries.
Battalion 5: Crews completed apparatus checks and station maintenance.
SATURDAY, JUNE 10
The Modesto Nuts baseball team hosted a First Responder Appreciation Night, with a special tribute to Captain Doug McCullough. Fire Chief Alan Ernst and Police Chief Brandon Gillespie threw out the first pitch with Captain McCullough’s son Brian. Modesto Fire and Modesto PD honor guard presented the colors
Battalion 5: 11:38 a.m. – Brush 28, Grass 27, Water Tender 27, and BC5 responded to 26 Mile Road just north of Eastman for an escaped burn pile. On scene crews had a burn pile that jumped into a grass field with five acres of grass burning. Brush 28 took action on the left flank and Grass 27 took action on the right. The fire was quickly stopped at 12 acres. The fire was in CalFire’s responsibility area. When they arrived, we turned the incident over to them. We stayed on scene to assist with mop up and supplied the engines with water from the water tender.
FRIDAY, JUNE 9
Battalion 2: Engine 21, E23, and E26 attended rural water supply training at Station 17.
11:59 p.m. – Engine 24, E23, E22, E21, E28, Truck 1, Battalion 2, and Battalion 4 responded to a working structure fire at the 13000 block of Emma Lane in Hickman. Engine 24 arrived to find an attached garage on fire with extension into the attic. FIU determined the fire was accidental from a heat lamp in the garage.
Battalion 5: Crews trained on rural water supply and overhaul policy review.
Engine 28 conducted company level training.
12:55 p.m. – Brush 28 responded to a smoke check in the area of River Road and Sawyer Road. They located a fire in the river bottom approximately a quarter of an acre in heavy fuels.
THURSDAY, JUNE 8
MST companies attended quarterly engineer training provided by the training division held at Station 17 focusing on rural water supply.
A promotional ceremony was held at Fire Admin. Fire Chief Ernst presented Captain Milbeck with his captains’ badge, pinned by Chief Wise.
Battalion 5 and Chief Tietjen attended Oakdale Fire Protection District Board Meeting.
7:44 p.m. – E26, E9 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to the intersection of Claribel Road and Terminal Avenue for a vehicle accident. E26 arrived with two vehicles involved, assumed IC and requested all train traffic stop. One person was transported to a local hospital. CHP investigating
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7
MST companies attended quarterly engineer training provided by the training division held at Station 17 focusing on rural water supply.
Battalion 2: 4:32 p.m. – E26 responded to the 2600 block of Topeka Street for a subject in respiratory distress. Oak Valley Ambulance was already on scene. E26 assisted with ventilations and sent one firefighter on the ambulance to a local hospital.
Battalion 5: 10:51 a.m. – Modesto Grass 27, Water Tender 27, Brush 28, Grass 29, and BC5 responded to a vegetation fire in the 18000 block of Milton Road along with CalFire TCU for a report of a field on fire. Upon arrival there was approximately two acres involved with a moderate rate of spread in light flashy fuels. Crews were able to mobile attack the fire and contain it to a total of six acres within the State Response Area (SRA).
1:58 p.m. – Modesto Water Rescue 28, Water Rescue 29, and BC5 responded to Woodward Reservoir in the 14000 block of 26 Mile Road for a report of two kayakers that had flipped out of their kayak and could not swim to shore not wearing life jackets. While responding there was updated information that the reporting party had gone into the lake to help them also without a life jacket on. Water Rescue 28 was able to locate and retrieve all three people and bring them safely to shore.
TUESDAY, JUNE 6
Crews continued to train on truck company operations. Topics covered were maintained safety considerations for placement and operation.
