The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Jan. 17 through Monday, Jan. 23. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, JAN. 23
Battalion 5: 7:29 p.m. – Engine 27, 26, 23, 7, 9, 29, Quint 22, and Truck 5 responded to the report of a working fire in a senior living facility in the City of Oakdale. On arrival there was nothing showing and responders went into investigation mode. Crews located a dryer on fire. Crews quickly removed and extinguished the fire, preventing any extension to the building. They worked with staff to ensure all occupants were accounted for and then had everyone sheltered into their room while they removed the strong smell of smoke. PG&E responded and secured a gas fitting and confirmed no leak. Once all smoke was removed, crews turned the facility back over to staff and cleared the scene.
SUNDAY, JAN. 22
Battalion 5: Crews conducted probationary firefighter training.
Captains did test prep with several members taking the exam.
SATURDAY, JAN. 21
Battalion 2: Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District rotated through and completed fit testing.
Engine 26 and E27 met at Riverbank High School to work on 2.5” hose deployment as well as 5” supply lines.
Battalion 5: At approximately 12 p.m., Engine 28, E27 and BC5 responded to a single vehicle rollover on Stearns Road. The driver had minor injuries.
12:36 p.m. – Engine 28 was dispatched to the 11000 block of Claribel Road for a vehicle fire.
FRIDAY, JAN. 20
Crews rotated through Stations 15 or 31 conducting SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) fit testing.
Probationary firefighters Brown, Lewallen and Cockrell were congratulated for the successful completion of their 10-month test.
New firefighters raised the flag for their duty station on their first day.
Battalion 2: Capt. Zurilgen and Capt. Burke began their orientation with Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, they will be on a 40-hour week training schedule until Feb. 3. They will be assigned to B shift beginning Feb 7, and were welcomed to SCFPD.
Respiratory fit testing was completed by BC 2 companies.
6:19 p.m. – Engine 26 responded to a vehicle fire on Mesa at Richardson. On arrival a vehicle on top of a communications pole was found, negative fire, and the driver was gone on arrival. Law enforcement was able to locate the driver and brought back to the scene, no medical aid was rendered.
Battalion 5: 1:02 p.m. – Modesto E3, E7, E9, E27, T5, Stanislaus E23, E26, Q22, BC2, BC5, and FIU were dispatched to a commercial working structure fire in the 300 block of South Oak Avenue, Oakdale. E27 arrived on-scene of an outpatient hospital facility with nothing showing. Crews were able to locate a burnt HVAC belt on a roof top unit that set off the fire alarm and produced a strong odor within the building. There was no fire extension beyond the HVAC unit; all staff and patients were able to return to the facility after crews ventilated the structure with positive pressure ventilation fans.
THURSDAY, JAN. 19
Members of the technical rescue team conducted high angle rescue training.
Command Staff conducted an MST department briefing.
Battalion 5: Crews continued to rotate through annual fit testing at Fire Station 15.
Probationary firefighters continued to rotate through 10-month testing.
Crews conducted company level training with probationary firefighters who just graduated the Fire Academy.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 18
Crews were fit tested to ensure their self-contained breathing apparatus masks are sized correctly and function properly.
Battalion 5: 10:21 a.m. – Modesto Engine 3, SQ11, E27, E28, Stanislaus Q22, E26, BC1, BC5, and FIU were dispatched to a residential working structure fire in the 5000 block of Landon Drive in Station 26’s FMA. Crews arrived on-scene of a two-story house with a light haze of smoke from the second story. The source of the smoke was determined to be a malfunctioning bathroom exhaust fan.
TUESDAY, JAN. 17
Battalion 2: Crews continue to train with new firefighters assigned to C Shift.
Battalion 5: 8:49 a.m. – Engine 28, Engine 23, Engine 24 and BC1 were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with possible entrapment on Warnerville Road in the Oakdale Fire District. Engine 28 arrived to find a large propane truck overturned with the driver out of the vehicle. Upon further investigation, Engine 28 found the propane tank leaking and started additional response (Haz Mat 4, DER, CHP and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department) to the incident. At approximately 10 p.m., vehicle was up righted and the process offloading the propane was started. Logistical support for the incident was provided Modesto Fire Admin, Fire Training Division and the Oakdale Police Department.
