Vanetta Sipe has been going to the Oakdale Rodeo ever since she can remember. She continues to work at the family’s concession stand serving up corn dogs, cotton candy and other favorite fare.

This year, she was also the Grand Marshal and, at 99, is excited for her birthday, coming up on June 2, when she will turn 100 years young.

“It was great, we had fun,” she said of taking part in the annual parade, riding in style as the Grand Marshal on Saturday, April 14.

She also enjoys still being involved in the concession business at the rodeo grounds.

“It’s fun, we meet new people every year, and see the old ones too,” she said, chuckling. “I like to watch all the kids grow up.”

Along with Sipe being involved, this year’s edition of the rodeo saw Oakdale’s own Sylvana Talamantes crowned as the Rodeo Queen and bright, sunny skies for the two days of competition in the PRCA event.

Bucking bulls, tie-down roping, barrel racing, the humorous commentary of rodeo clown Wolfey, along with the bullfighting skills showcased by Oakdale resident Rick Moffatt, kept the huge crowds enthralled both days at the Oakdale Saddle Club rodeo grounds. The festivities during the week also included the Businessman’s Roping on Tuesday, the Cowgirl Luncheon on Wednesday, Arrest Your Boss and the Chamber Mixer with the Queen Coronation on Thursday, the parade on Saturday and the rodeo itself on Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15.
