The weather cooperated just enough for the Oakdale Mustangs boys tennis team on Friday for them to get in their road set against Central Catholic.

Oakdale, which had been off since March 8 due to weather, returned to action and defeated the Raiders 6-3 to improve to 2-1 on the season. Oakdale took four of six in singles action, including a clutch performance by Frankie Dutra. He defeated Sing Lau in three sets 6-3, (4-6) 6-4.

“Frankie’s win was clinching for us, and he won a real dog fight for the team,” said head coach Grant Miller.

Also getting wins for the Mustangs in singles action were Liam Peters, Ludvig Westberg and C.J. Toledo.

In doubles action, the Mustangs took two out of three to help secure the road win. Matt Kjeldgaard and Chris Frye won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 and the team of Brady Noel and Zach Nielson regrouped to win in three sets. After dropping the first set 5-7, Noel and Nielson bounced back with a 6-0, 6-4 win.

“We had a great win today. We went into Central Catholic’s house and came away with a win. Everyone played amazing and the guys really dug deep,” said Miller, who pointed out the team only got to practice twice in the last two weeks.

With the rain out of the forecast for now, the team is scheduled to play a pair of games this week. On Tuesday, March 27 Oakdale was scheduled to play Weston Ranch on the road following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale will have their home season opener on Thursday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m.
