The Oakdale Shelter Pet Alliance (OSPA) will be at Petco in the Crossroads Shopping Center in Riverbank on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will have several pets available for adoption.

The OSPA recently celebrated the 500th spay/neuter since the program started in August 2011. Several people along with their cats and dogs boarded the shuttle on Monday, Aug. 12 to benefit from the vouchers the OSPA offers.

“As word about the program spreads, the number of spay neuter vouchers issued and redeemed has increased tremendously,” stated Betsie Corwin, President of the OSPA.

In 2012 there were 161 pets spayed or neutered and so far this year they have had approximately 300 pets fixed through the program.

“I am confident the Oakdale Shelter Pet Alliance voucher program will get 500 dogs and cats fixed this year, which in turn prevents thousands of unplanned, unwanted puppies and kittens who might otherwise end up at the animal shelter,” said Corwin.

On Saturday, Aug. 10 the OSPA participated in the ‘Strut Your Mutt’ event in downtown Oakdale to help raise funds for the Oakdale Animal Shelter.

According to Debi Scoles, OSPA member, the event was a success with over $200 donated in tips and at least 50 dogs and owners in attendance.

“It was fun to meet all the different types of dogs and to talk to the owners and learn about their dogs,” said Scoles. “Many were dogs rescued from shelters or other situations, and several had been adopted from the Oakdale Shelter.”

Scoles also added that several businesses participated in the event with special merchandise displays, water bowls, treats, and tip jars. The Yogurt Station set up a table and donated all proceeds received that morning to the OSPA. Petco in Riverbank also had a table set up for donations and doggie gifts for customers that donated.

Currently, the Strut Your Mutt fundraiser with Best Friends Rescue is ongoing and the OSPA is a little over halfway to its overall goal of raising $10,000 for the homeless pets of Oakdale and Riverbank, according to Corwin.

The OSPA Team will be participating in the upcoming Strut Your Mutt event at Treasure Island in San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 21.
