Oakdale Junior High School will be receiving much needed improvements for the school’s multi-purpose room/cafeteria, thanks to developer fees and a unanimous vote Monday night at the Oakdale Joint Unified School Board meeting. Modernization of the multi-purpose room will begin Friday, May 25.
The bid for work was awarded to Robert E. Boyer Construction, Inc. which came in with a bid amount of $539,000 for the total project.
“This bid pleasantly came in well below the projected anticipated amount, so that was good news for us,” Assistant Superintendent Larry Mendonca shared with the board. He noted that the expenditure was previously approved utilizing developer fees.
Other business items conducted during the Monday night meeting included first readings of the Student Wellness and Student Assessment policies. The third quarter developer fee report was also given by Chief Business Officer Susan Dyke. The new fund balance is just north of $762,000 with project commitments to be determined.
Monday evening also proved to be a night of accolades and recognition as the school board recognized the Oakdale High School Academic Decathlon and Occupational Olympics teams for impressive seasons. Oakdale’s Distinguished Young Woman 2019 Shannen Yang was also congratulated by the board.
“They did an amazing job. This was a fun group,” AcaDec Coach Dee Hawksworth said of her championship team.
She also acknowledged administrators, the board, as well as parents for their continued support of the OHS team.
Occupational Olympics Coach Steve Jericoff talked about the competitive nature he shares with the team and the challenge they felt by not bringing home the title this year.
“They did everything they could and we’re proud of them,” he said, noting the size and strength of Turlock High School as the team’s challenge.
“Please tell your team that we’re proud of them and congratulations on a great competition,” Board President Mike House stated to Jericoff.
The Monday night meeting began at 6:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance being led by Sierra View elementary students Amelia Bradshaw, Bentley Rommel, Brandi Harrison and Weston McGhee.
The next meeting will be hosted on Monday, May 14 at the OJUSD Technology Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The OJUSD Retiree Recognition gathering will precede the meeting, beginning at 5:30 p.m. that evening.
