Begin the New Year with a “rockin’” good time at the Library as the Mother Lode Mineral Society surrounds us with rocks, minerals, fossils, and more in a special presentation geared to families. This program will explore the “frozen past” with dinosaur and Ice Age materials, a few “bugs,” and maybe you will uncover some shark teeth. This program begins at noon on Thursday, Jan. 3. A great “after-the-Holidays” idea.

Our Children’s Craft will be Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m. “Have Fun with Trolls.” Make a silly Troll party hat, a colorful bracelet of beads, and other “troll inspired” crafts.

We will have two Lego Days this month. Kids can create their own masterpieces using our fabulous Lego collection and we will display these great works in the Library. The building fun begins at 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 10 and 24.

And, this New Year, we have a book club for you. We are reaching out to every age and interest with our four book club choices!

Tweens, get ready to join us for a Book Party inspired by the “I Survived” book series. Will they survive the earthquake, will they sink with the Titanic, will they be covered in ash from the volcanic explosion? Pick up one of the books then come by the Library on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m. and see who makes it. This book club will feature “your interests, your ideas, and your fun!”

Kids ages 5-8, a book club for kids. Listen to a story, discuss and share, and do a related activity based on the book. The “Book Worms Book Club” will meet monthly, no sign-ups required. Join us for book fun this month on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. We’ll be making “Shrinky Dinks.”

Our “Crafteen Book Club” for teens, ages 13-18, will continue on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. This month we’ll be sharing our thoughts on our favorite books while we make unique and colorful “Removable Window Clings.”

And, on the same day, Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 11:30 a.m., we will be hosting our on-going Oakdale Library Book Club for adults. Join in to meet, mingle, and chat with other literature lovers. Read and discover new books, genres, and authors. This month, our members will be sharing their personal favorite books. New members are always welcome.

Call the Oakdale Library at 209-847-4204 for info about any or all of our fantastic “Book Club” opportunities. Please join us.

Our popular “Little Scientists” S.T.E.A.M. Program for ages from Kindergarten to eight years old, will be on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 3:30 p.m. Listen to a book, then explore the world of astronomy as we make a “nebula in a jar” and gaze at the constellations. Sign-ups are required in advance; call the Oakdale Library at 209-847-4204 for info. See you in the “science lab.”

Our Wee Move and Play program, featuring unstructured imaginative play for little ones, 5 and under, will be Mondays, Jan. 14 and Jan. 28, at 11 a.m.

Parents can help their children learn social skills and have fun at the same time.

Our Computer Classes for adults will be focused on “Basics” this month, Tuesdays, Jan. 22 and 29. These classes begin at 10:30 a.m. Call the Library for info and be sure to reserve your space. Each session is limited to four people. Call 209-847-4204.

And, starting Monday, Jan. 28, we look ahead to Valentine’s Day, as we invite all ages to stop by and create their own personalized Valentine Card for our senior friends in our local care homes. “A smiling heart can make other hearts smile too!”

The Friends of the Oakdale Library are the main sponsors of so many of our programs and prizes. They constantly promote and encourage the great gift of literacy at all levels for everyone. The Friends will hold their monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 28 at 1:30 p.m. Forms to join and info are available at the Oakdale Library, or call 209-847-4204.
