MJC Science Series Begins

Modesto Junior College’s weekly Science Colloquium will kick off the fall semester series with the topic “Global Climate Change Update” presented by Richard Anderson, Ph.D., MJC professor emeritus of biology, on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 3:15 p.m. in the Science Community Center, Room 115, on West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Ave., Modesto.

The Colloquium series offers one hour discussions on timely science-related topics, and is free and open to the public. There is a $2 charge for on campus parking without a permit.

The following fall 2017 MJC Science Colloquium presentations are also scheduled for Wednesdays at 3:15 p.m. in Science Community Center 115:

Sept. 27 – “Gravitational Waves: A New Window on the Universe” by Doug Singleton, Ph.D.

Oct. 4 – “Genetics Information Explosion and You” by Karin Wagner, MS, LCGC, genetic counselor, Kaiser Permanente.

Oct. 11 – “Keeping Local Water Safe” by Ryan Sellman, P.E., Sr. engineer, Carollo Engineers, Inc.

Oct. 18 – “Physics for All” by Don Williams, C.S.U. Fresno Physics Outreach.

Oct. 25 – “How Original California People Used Native Plants Everyday” by Lillian Vallee, Ph.D., MJC professor emeritus of English.

Nov. 1 – “Exploring the Resources of the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex” by Jack Sparks, outdoor recreation planner, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Nov. 8 – “Giants and Gorgets: A Journey to the Prehistoric Mounds of the Southeastern U.S.” by Susan Kerr, Ph.D., MJC professor of anthropology.

Nov. 15 – “Nutrition: From the Science to Your Plate” by Sally Gerling, nutritionist.

Nov. 22 – Thanksgiving vacation; no program scheduled.

Nov. 29 – “Nanotechnology and Bioengineering” by Alex Martin-Ginnold, engineer.

Dec. 6 – “Adam and Eve and Evolution: Seeking a Synthesis of Science with Faith” by Reverend John Roberts
