The unofficial start of summer, the long three-day holiday weekend for Memorial Day, will be a busy one around the region. It is graduation week for Oakdale schools and also a traditional holiday getaway for many. The California Highway Patrol will observe the weekend as a maximum enforcement period with more drivers expected on the highways.
Also, in observance of Memorial Day, banks and the post office will be closed on Monday, May 28. Businesses have the option of closing; The Leader office will be closed for the holiday.
Members of the local Leo’s Club, the youth arm of the Lions, will be working on Saturday morning to place small American flags on the graves of veterans buried at the local cemeteries, with the effort to begin about 9 a.m. Officials said they may also have assistance from the Boy Scouts in handling the project. The flags will be picked up on Monday afternoon.
For those wishing to attend a Memorial Day service, there is one scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Burwood Cemetery off River Road and another scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Valley Home Memorial Park on Valley Home road, both being offered by the Escalon American Legion Post.
