The City of Oakdale Certified Farmers Market kicks off on Thursday, June 2 and will run weekly through Sept. 29. The Farmers Market will be on Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on North Third Avenue, between E and F streets.
Visitors to the weekly market have the chance to purchase some of the freshest fruits and vegetables around, some coming in from the fields shortly before heading to retail facilities.
A “certified” farmers market means the county agriculture department inspects the farms for quality and that the produce is grown in the area.
This year’s market will feature fresh produce from returning vendors with the addition of several new vendors to provide customers with much more produce and products to select from. One of the new introductions this year will be a vendor selling hummus; a dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. It is a popular food throughout the Middle East and elsewhere.
“This event has been going well for the city,” said Oakdale Recreation Services Coordinator Chris Thomas. “I’m looking forward to the new vendors.”
There will be a variety of seasonal fruits, nuts, vegetables, fresh cut flowers, food vendors, baked goods, and entertainment. In future markets there will be cooking demonstrations and live bands.
Anyone interested in participating as a vendor or entertainer should contact the City of Oakdale Parks and Recreation Department at 845-3591.
