Due to extreme temperatures expected today, the City of Oakdale has offered the Gladys L. Lemons Senior Community Center at 450 East A St. as a cooling center. The center will remain open until 6 p.m. today for anyone needing such assistance.

Also available as a local cooling center is the Stanislaus Public Library located at 151 S. First Ave. The library will also remain open until 6 p.m.

A cooling center is a temporary air-conditioned public space set up to deal with the health effects of a heat wave. Cooling centers are meant to prevent hyperthermia, especially among the elderly without air conditioning at home.

A strengthening of high pressure will push temperatures up through the California valleys, according to an AccuWeather report. Today’s high is expected to be 104 degrees
