Melissa Holcomb, Barbara Linthicum and Ellen Wearin returned last week from a 2-week trip to New Zealand where they visited with Melissa’s son Matt. He is a scuba diving instructor in a beautiful little town on the north island called Leigh. After visiting Auckland for two days where the threesome saw the “city of sails” from the skytower and experienced the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival, they traveled north to Leigh to stay in a “batch” (a beach cabin) with an outside bathroom and cicadas everywhere. Melissa did an awesome job of driving on the left side of the roads while the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. Tours to museums, the Waitangi Treaty grounds, farmers markets and delicious meals (and the wine tasting) made the days fly by. Then they traveled south once more to a lovely bed and breakfast where they visited the Waitomo Caves, which are lit by glow worms (fly larvae). Then they were on to Rotorua with its volcanic thermal activity. They toured several lakes in a Duck (1944 U.S. Army vehicle), which drove right into the water where trout live in abundance. Mrs. Wearin’s favorite was the Mauri village and the Haka (war dance) and feasting on delicious food cooked under hot rocks that established a healthy respect for the true culture of New Zealand’s Mauris. The Kiwi birds, beautiful landscapes, wonderful people everywhere and the fascinating accent of the people made the trip one to remember!

Benny’s Ball Feed was Saturday with lots of good food and camaraderie. It was good to see Andrew Schlegel home on leave from Hawaii where he is stationed and also Alex Barrett was there, back in the area.
