It starts with breakfast at the Odd Fellows Hall, craft fair in the clubhouse, shops open, kids carnival by the Orange Blossom 4-H, and the rolling for five years and under gets under way on the tennis court at noon. All the rest roll on the street starting at 1 p.m. There will be food booths and kettle corn for your munching enjoyment. This is year 46 for the event!

The Knights Ferry third and fourth graders went to Angel Island last Thursday to tour the Immigration Station. This place was built and put into service in 1910 and called the Ellis Island of the West. Designed to control the flow of Chinese to this country, it was primarily a detention center. It was abandoned in 1940. Emma Fallentine liked taking the ferry ride to the island and seeing the Chinese writing on the wall. Eden Cassinetto enjoyed the tour and saw the bunks where the Chinese slept. Brandon Carroll liked walking through the Immigration Station. They were not prepared for the 140 steps up the cliff or the hike to the station. The day was crystal clear after the morning fog burned off and all enjoyed the trip.

At the MAC meeting last Thursday, Oakdale Rural Fire Department reported there were three incidents that happened when Station 2 was open and two incidents when the station was closed because of the “brown out.” Gary Haywood of Stanislaus County Public Works reported that the dead tree on Orange Blossom had been taken down and they were working on trees and limbs from the big storm. Incidents were reported by the Sheriffs Department, not much happening in the Ferry. Jason Faridi from the U.S. Army Corp reported on the upcoming Salmon Festival to be held at the park on November 7th. The salmon count in Ripon is 50 percent higher than last year. The Corp will be removing trash trees soon. There is a new park manager, Dwayne Johnson, who took over this month. He had been stationed in Knights Ferry years ago. Welcome! Raul Melendez told of the one opening on our MAC, Sally Goehring will be leaving her position in December and as there will be no meetings in November and December she was thanked at this meeting. She was awarded a gift from the county for her service.

Knights Ferry Garden Club President and Vice President were unable to attend the Valley Lode District meeting in Sonora so Maureen McKibban and Linda Morris went in their places. They enjoyed the program on vermiculture (worms) and how to raise them for their worm castings for fertilizer. On their way to Sonora they had an encounter with a very nice California Highway Patrolman.
