Many residents heard shots fired around 11:30 p.m. Sunday before last but very little information was released until late morning the next day. An officer involved shooting in the rafters parking lot had the road coming into Knights Ferry from the highway closed for several hours. The area was full of Sheriff vehicles and investigators gathering evidence for most of the morning.

Fred and Lisa Dolling had a wonderful visit from their son Justin, daughter-in-law Sarah, and grandchildren, Rylee, Elliotte, and Austin! While Justin and Sarah attended a work conference in San Diego, the grandkids were having a fantastic time with Fred and Lisa. They went to Rockin’ Jump, spent a day in Columbia, and spent time with family. Fred and Lisa were so excited to spend special time with their grandkids. I wonder if Rylee, Elliotte, and Austin know how special it is to have grandparents who own a zebra.

Oakdale High School had their first day of school. Good luck to all the Knights Ferry graduates attending high school. High school is a lot of fun but remember to come back for a visit and to give back to the little school on the hill.

The Knights Ferry 7th and 8th graders are fundraising for their upcoming trip to Washington D.C. So far, they have sold hot dogs at the Peddler’s Faire and currently selling raffle tickets for an iPad Air. Now they are hosting a concert and Taco Truck taco lunch at Knights Ferry School with some awesome bands preforming on September 30! For more tickets or more information, call 881-3382 or email me at nastasiasweet25@gmail.com.

The Coston family went on a last-minute camping trip to Yosemite for a long weekend. Caleb persuaded his parents to invite his friend, Deagan Sweet. Caleb’s favorite part of the trip was jumping off the rocks at Rainbow Pools and hanging out with one of his favorite buddies, Deagan. It was a great way to end the summer vacation before school starts!

Earlier in the week around 11:30 p.m., a car sideswiped a pole just outside city limits of town losing power to a handful of homes for a few hours while PG&E worked to replace the pole restore power. The driver was okay.

Linda Morris traveled to Universal Studios with her daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Rowan and Rhiannon Hawthorn, earlier in the month. Their trip to LA was off to a windy start because Linda’s back window was unable to roll up! Things started to look up when the valet parking crew took special care of her car by parking it right next to the kiosk so they could keep an eye on the car and protect Linda’s car from potential theft. Then at check in, the concierge helped them get a better deal on tickets saving a lot of money and front of the line privileges! Linda tipped everyone very well that trip! Another highlight of the trip was Sheriff Matt giving the ladies a police car ride from Universal Studios to their hotel where Linda rode in the front seat and Rowan and Rhiannon rode in the back seat!

Over the course of five days, Bryce Hobbs summited Mount Rainier in Washington’s Cascade Range. He said, “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but it was the best thing I’ve ever done!” The sizeable mountain boasts a summit elevation of 14,400 feet that is topped with two volcanic craters and a heavily glaciated peak. What a climb, way to go Bryce!

One of the last summer activities for the kids in Knights Ferry was a “ditch night” in town where families gather and the kids play a night time game of tag. I grew up calling it “ditch ’em” because as a 12-year-old, it sounded a lot cooler than tag. There were easily 25 kids playing in town. The parents sat in the middle of town with chairs and a small snack to share, enjoying each other’s company and watching for cars and kids running about town. We are lucky to have so many families in town and our families are lucky to have such an amazing town where kids can run and make good memories together.

First day of school is Aug. 16 and I can’t wait to hear all about the fun the students had over summer break.

Did you know: The first schoolhouse built in the current location was a little red school house constructed in 1865. After a fire destroyed the building on July 4, 1899, a white two-story schoolhouse was built but destroyed by yet another fire on March 1, 1971. Three years later, a new schoolhouse was dedicated by the Masonic Grand Lodge of California on March 30, 1974.

If only the past students could see the newer buildings we have added over the years!
