chp

A 27-year-old Turlock woman died in a head-on collision while traveling west on Highway 108, east of Lancaster Road, Friday morning, April 30. The crash occurred when her westbound 2006 Volkswagen sedan hit a 2018 International box truck traveling in the opposite direction. The collision occurred shortly after 6 a.m.

Officials with the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Norma Garcia.

Garcia, who died on the scene, became the 22nd fatality recorded on Stanislaus County roads within the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol this year.

California Highway Patrol identified the other driver as a 56-year-old man from Santa Clara. He suffered minor injuries.

For unknown reasons, Garcia allowed her vehicle to enter the eastbound traffic lane, resulting in the fatal collision.

The cause of the crash is ongoing. Authorities said it occurred as the Volkswagen was approaching a right bend in the roadway and crossed into the opposite lane. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane after colliding. Caltrans was called to the scene and provided one-way traffic control; there was minimal delay to passing motorists.
