Students Prepare For County Spelling Championship

Top spellers from area schools will compete in the Stanislaus County Elementary Spelling Championship later this month. The Elementary Spelling Championship, for children in grades 4-6, is slated for Oct. 30 at Enochs High School, 3201 Sylvan Ave., Modesto. Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, the event is open to the public and begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.

Participants from Cloverland, Fair Oaks, Magnolia and Sierra View elementary schools out of Oakdale are scheduled to take part, along with California Avenue Elementary, Mesa Verde and the Riverbank Language Academy all being represented at this year’s championship as well.

Also due to participate are students from Agnes Baptist, Barrington, Beard, Bonita, Bret Harte, Capistrano, Central Valley Charter, Chatom, Chrysler, Connecting Waters Charter, Cunningham, Denair Charter Academy, Dieterich, Dutcher, Eisenhut, Empire, Everett, Fox Road, Fremont, Great Valley Academy, Hart-Ransom, Hart-Ransom Charter, Hickman, Hughes, Julien, Keyes, Keyes Charter, Lakewood, Martone, Our Lady of Fatima, Paradise Charter, Ross, Sacred Heart, St. Stanislaus, Sipherd, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Stroud, Walnut, and Whitehead.

The top two spellers in the Elementary Spelling Championship will represent Stanislaus County at the state competition in Stockton on May 9, 2020. The third place speller will serve as an alternate.
