Shelly Crist has been the lead Campus Custodian, Supervisor of grounds and buildings and coordinator of set up and take down for all special events for the Oakdale Junior High campus for 30 years. She has been employed by the Oakdale School District since 1988. She briefly served at the Magnolia site then came to the Jr. High campus. She is the recipient of this year’s Joyce Reed Award.

She grew up in Coalinga, attended schools there, as well as West Hills Community College. She married and moved to the Oakdale area, and began her career with the Oakdale School District. She has two daughters, Nicole and Sarah, five grandchildren and has two step-children, Matt and Audrey.

Before she is off work each day, she assists the night crew to set up for special events.

Crist also keeps busy with community events by coordinating Thanksgiving meals through her church in Modesto. She participates in bowling events, and used to be very active in baseball. Her hobbies are gardening, yard beautification and outdoor activities.

Her goals for the future, when she retires someday, are to enjoy life, children and grandchildren.

“Shelly is a hit at the OJHS campus with her personality, always willing to help others cheerfully,” Reed said. “She is a positive role-model for everyone. It is no wonder the OJHS staff selected her as the recipient of this award.”

The Joyce Reed Living Memorial Sunshine Citizen of the Year Award was created when Reed retired from the Junior High in 2000. She taught there for 24 years. The perpetual plaque is on the wall in the office and each year a new recipient’s name is engraved on it. It encourages selfless contribution to the development of our students, the betterment of our schools, and enrichment of our community. The characteristics include teaching excellence, student service, campus leadership, community youth involvement.

The award was accompanied by a gift of $50, a letter of congratulations, and a commemorative gift.
