OHS Team Earns Academic Medals, Awards At County Competition

Oakdale High School finished first overall and also won the Super Quiz at the 33rd Annual Stanislaus County Academic Decathlon on Feb. 1-2 at Gregori High School, Modesto. The “Aca Dec” is considered the biggest academic event for local high schools and is presented by the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE). It is a two-day series of tests, speeches and interviews, featuring this year’s theme, “Russia” with a focus on the space race and the Russian revolution.

OHS will go on to represent Stanislaus County at the California Academic Decathlon State Finals, March 14-17 in Sacramento.

The 34-student team, which includes a nine-member competing team, is coached by OHS teacher Linda Dodge. Listed below are the individual results for OHS team members at this year’s Aca Dec.

Individual High Point Winners were Dylan Hawksworth-Lutzow for the Honors team, who was also the county Overall Points Champion; Jerrod Colvin for the Scholastic team; Thomas Dempsey for the Varsity team; and Austin Clayton for the Alternates team.

Twenty-three of Oakdale’s 34 members came home with medals from the event. On the competing team Honors squad, Hawksworth-Lutzow captured eight medals, Madison Lane earned seven, and Alexander Keyser took three. On the Scholastic squad, Jarrod Colvin collected 10 medals, Elizabeth Erwin grabbed eight, and Adam Jensen also received eight. On the Varsity squad, Dempsey won eight medals, Jared Medeiros secured seven, and Fernando Cruz also garnered seven. Alternate team member Clayton netted six medals.
