Salmon Count Begins Along Stanislaus River
Salmon

The fall-run Chinook salmon migration is kicking off in the Stanislaus River. The Stanislaus fish-counting weir was installed on Thursday, Aug. 29 and 19 adult salmon have been observed as of Monday, Sept. 23.

The weir has operated annually since 2003. Monitoring the number of salmon that migrate from the ocean to lay their eggs in freshwater helps to understand the health of the population, as well as factors that may cause the number of salmon to increase or decrease from year to year.

Funding for salmon monitoring at the Stanislaus weir is provided by the Oakdale Irrigation District, South San Joaquin Irrigation District, and Tri-Dam. Data collection is conducted by FISHBIO.
