A two-vehicle accident on Saturday evening, Oct. 30 resulted in one fatality and injuries to two other people.

The crash, according to the California Highway Patrol, was on State Route 4 east of Dunton Road just about 6 p.m.

The driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Christian Rocha, 19, of Brentwood, was driving westbound at a high rate of speed and passing other vehicles across solid double yellow lines.

The second driver, a 50-year-old man from Arnold in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, was eastbound on Highway 4 going about 60 miles per hour.

According to witnesses, as Rocha’s vehicle was overtaking another vehicle it was passing, across the double yellow lines, he made an abrupt turning movement to the right, driving back into the westbound lane. He then overcorrected and swerved his vehicle to the left, across the solid double yellow lines, directly into the path of the approaching Chevrolet. The Chevy driver applied his brakes and swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision, the CHP report indicated. However, the front of Rocha’s vehicle collided with the front of the Chevy. The Cruze caught on fire following the collision. CHP, fire and ambulance personnel all responded to the scene.

Rocha was pronounced deceased at the scene; the CHP report said he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The 50-year-old driver of the Silverado, along with his 13-year-old male passenger, were both wearing their seatbelts. The 50-year-old complained of pain and abrasions, the 13-year-old, also from Arnold, had minor abrasions.

At the time of the CHP report, it was unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
