Red Dog Ash and North Country Blue will take the stage at the West Side Theatre in Newman on Saturday, May 5. Doors open at 7 p.m.; showtime is 8 p.m. and the cost is $12 General Admission, $15 Reserved Section with students admitted for half-price.

Red Dog Ash is an award-winning bluegrass band from California’s Central Valley. The quintet is known for its original compositions, hard-driving tunes, tight harmonies, and authentic high-lonesome vocals. Inspired by the bluegrass tradition, smart and passionate in its performance, the band’s unique sound has recently and aptly been called Soulgrass.

North Country Blue includes some of the best young bluegrass musicians in California; four young women whose ages range from just 12 to 14. All of the girls have been stalwarts in the California Bluegrass Associations Kids on Bluegrass program and Youth Academy, and they have several years of prior band experience among them despite their young age. The band members come from all over Northern California from Berkeley to the Sierra foothills to the Central Valley and chose their name after it was dropped in their tip bucket as a suggestion at a street fair.

Meanwhile, The West Side Players are having auditions for the upcoming variety show, “That’s Entertainment” on May 6 at 5 p.m. and May 7 at 7 p.m. at the West Side Theatre, 1331 Main St. Newman. This show will include dance, solo and group singing numbers and skits. Open to adults and students grades K-12.

Be prepared to sing a short song or read a short dialogue. The performance dates are July 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29. Rehearsals start May 24.
