Fishing Report

Every year, there are new fishing products that come out that quickly become the hot item. Back in the mid to late 80's, it was the Salt and Pepper Grub. They couldn't make them fast enough. Now, I don't know anyone that uses them. I've always won...Read More

Fishing Report

One of the most difficult things I’ve had to deal with since purchasing a new boat has been rigging the boat. In the past, I’ve purchased used boats that were already rigged up the way I wanted. All I had to do was replace those items that broke as time went on. I’ve had my current boat for about five months and don’t believe I’ll have it fully rigged for another year or two. There are just too many options and some of those options are pretty expensive. New boats, unlike cars, come pretty standard ...

Fishing Report

Several friends of mine have recently damaged their boats while out boating in our local lakes. The water levels are falling so fast that there’s no way that lake management can keep up with marking all the hazardous areas. Personally, I’ve chosen to stay away from certain lakes. Launching conditions are the worst they’ve been in a long time and with the water being so low, there’s just not enough water to get away from the crowds of boats. My advice to any of you planning on going out before the summer is over is to ...

Fishing Report

The other day while driving home from work I saw a truck towing a trailer with a couple snowmobiles on it. I thought to myself, that’s odd being the middle of summer. Then as I thought some more, I thought about my boat parked in my backyard with very few places to go anymore that have any water. Like a lot of you, I’m hoping for an early fall and lots of rain. If I’ve learned anything through writing this column, it’s that our weather system seems to go through cycles. I’m hoping that this ...

Fishing Report

The biggest fish I ever caught was caught by a rod and reel combo that cost me no more than $80 at the time. The biggest fish that I ever lost was lost while fishing with one of my most expensive rod and reel combo’s. Several years ago while talking with a local bass fishing professional, he told me “buy the best equipment that you can afford.” What he meant was that if $50 was your budget, then buy something within your budget. With that said, of all places to save a penny, I don’t recommend opting for ...

Fishing Report

Several weeks ago I ran into an angler that I haven’t seen in a few years. He’s got to be in his 70’s by now. As we were catching up, the excitement in his voice when talking about fishing was like if he was a kid again. He seemed excited about his next trip out and having a bead on the current fishing conditions. I couldn’t help but think to myself how strong a passion for fishing can really be. I’ve got friends who’ve sacrificed it all to fish professionally. Unfortunately for them, things ...

Fishing Report

School in many communities is now back in session, which signifies to me that summer is coming to an end. It’s been a pretty good summer. I kicked it off with a fishing trip and just recently officially ended my summer with a fishing trip. In the middle, I mixed in a couple camping trips to Clarks Fork, Lake Pardee, and even scouted out some future camping spots. Just like when I was a kid, the summer seemed to fly right by and now it’s time to get back to work. Going into each summer I usually have ...

Life jackets are one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on a boat. A lot of owners spend huge amounts of money on radio systems, wakeboard towers, downriggers, power poles, and other luxury items on their boats. When it comes to life jackets though, a lot of times they couldn’t tell you what sizes they have and some of them even keep them stowed away under a seat compartment somewhere. In the past 10 years or more suspender type life jackets have become popular amongst boaters. Most them are designed to automatically inflate once submerged in water. The ...
