Fishing Report

Last week while driving to a favorite camping spot of mine, I got behind a boat that was being towed by a small SUV. It wouldn’t have been too bad if the boat being towed was small but the boat was a lot bigger than the SUV which is very dangerous. Just because a car or truck can pull a boat or trailer, doesn’t mean that it’s safe. In the event that they were to blow a tire or have to suddenly stop, there’s no way they would be able to gain control of their trailer ...

Fishing Report

It seems like every year, as far back as I can remember, we’ve been in a drought. This one though is a little different. I’ve seen the water levels in some of our local lakes lower than I’ve ever seen them before. When I was a kid, this would be the prime time to scour the banks in search of fishing treasure. There are sure to be lures and other miscellaneous items that have been lost by anglers while fishing when the water levels were higher. If I only had a metal detector, who knows what can ...

Fishing Report

For several years now there’s been a mandatory inspection for boats entering our local lakes for Quagga-Zebra Mussels. Most of us I’m sure think of the inspection as a hassle but it’s necessary to help prevent these species from taking over our lakes. Quagga-Zebra Mussels are filter feeders that reproduce at alarming rates once they are introduced to a body of water. If they were allowed to take over a lake they would filter out all the suspended particulate, zooplankton, and phytoplankton in a body of water leaving smaller baitfish without a food source in turn leaving ...

Fishing Report

Summer time is top water fishing time for Bass. Catching Bass on a top water lure is one of the most exciting experiences in fishing. As exciting as it is, it also can be very difficult hooking up with a fish once it strikes. A common mistake anglers make when fishing with top water lures is setting the hook too early. Experienced anglers will tell you to wait until you feel the fish, but that’s easier said than done. It took me several years and many hours on the water until I finally was able to wait on my ...

Fishing Report

To quote one of my favorite authors, Henry David Thoreau, “Man is rich in comparison to what he can let alone.” I was reminded of that quote this past week as I was camping up at Clarks Fork. For those who have no idea where Clarks Fork is, it’s roughly 60 miles above Sonora, located in the Stanislaus National Forest. Unlike my last camping trip, there’s no WiFi or cell phone service. So, for four straight days it might as well have been 1985. It felt great not having to worry about checking emails, missed phone calls, and ...

First Time Winner At Toyota-Save Mart 350

At the 26th annual Toyota/Save Mart 350, Carl Edwards didn’t lead the most laps, but when he took over the top spot with 26 laps to go, he led the most important ones. It was Edwards’ first ever win on a road course. It was the culmination of a lot of hard work and practice on road courses. Edwards qualified fourth and looked to be strong, but his car fell off early on in during the race, but his crew chief (Jimmy Fennig) was able to make the right car setup calls that would put Edwards back up ...

Fishing Report

Fishing during the summer months is definitely not for someone who doesn’t like a little sunlight. This past week was extremely hot during the day causing even me to head back towards the dock. Not knowing how hot it was until I got behind the wheel of my truck I saw that it was 107 degrees. Once getting home I ended up sleeping the rest of the day while trying to regain some of the energy the sun had taken from me. Originally, I had planned to get off the water by noon but noon came and I decided ...

Fishing Report

Summer vacation has officially started for my family, this week we’ve been spending the first part of it camping at Lake Pardee. Actually, I’m typing this report from the picnic table of my campsite. Currently, we’re the only family camping mid-week, making it even more enjoyable. The fishing has been good; the early morning kokanee bite is great, I’ve even been able to catch a few during the middle of the day. The first night was rough though, as expected, my 2-year-old wasn’t on the same sleeping schedule as the rest of us. Night number ...

Fishing Report

Last week while reading the fishing report from Lake Pardee, I read that some of the regulars believed that if the cows were lying down in the morning, fishing was going to be tough, if they were standing, the bite was supposed to be good. So, on my way up to the lake I looked for the first cow nearest the lake and to my joy it was standing. I’m not usually one to buy into superstitions but this one I had to test for myself as it was different than any other that I’ve heard of before ...

Fishing Report

If you would have told me 10 years ago that someday I’d be selling my bass boat and buying a multi species boat I would have laughed at you. I did just that though and I’m not looking back. For years now while writing this report, I’ve often felt a little out of the touch with some of the reports being that I primarily fished for bass. If I caught a trout, catfish, striped bass, or anything else, it was while I was fishing for largemouth bass. That’s all changed in the past few years and ...

Growing up, I never used to wear sunglasses. Looking back, I can’t believe that I fished as long as I did without sunglasses. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I realized the benefits of a good pair of sunglasses. I was fishing with a friend one day when he started talking about how great his sunglasses were. Fishing Report

About ten years ago, I started a fishing club at the school where I work. We practiced several times of the week while I taught them how to cast, tie knots, spool their reels, and anything else that I thought they would need to know to get them started. In order to keep them interested, we scheduled a few trips out to some of our local lakes and had little competitions amongst each other to see who was going to catch the first and biggest fish. The club ended up being a huge success but unfortunately after four years my ...

Fishing Report

Last week I wrote about taking my dad out fishing for the day. The response I got from that column highlighted what I believe is a growing trend among today’s youth. There are far too many of them that have never been fishing. I can understand a kid that is 10 or 12 years old, but there are teens out there that have yet to go fishing. While doing a little research on the Internet, I came across an article where the author challenged his readers to take at least two kids out fishing each year. I really hope ...

I’ve been putting off changing the bunks on my boat’s trailer for several years now. Anyone who owns a boat knows that the boards the boat rests on eventually wear down. Several years ago I made some replacement bunks and have been meaning to swap them out as soon as I had a chance. The biggest problem was that in order to swap out the bunks I needed the boat off the trailer. Thanks to TV and Bassmaster Magazine I knew from the first time I watched or read about a bass tournament that I wanted to compete in one.
