Parents Complain To School Board

Several parents showed up at the Oakdale Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees regular meeting on March 11 to air their grievances during public comments about how discipline is handled at Sierra View Elementary School in relation to a case where a sixth grader brought bullets to school.

OJUSD Board President Mike Tozzi expressed the board's concern about school safety and direction was given to OJUSD Superintendent Marc Malone to provide an incident report to the board. Malone said that legally they're not allowed to publicly air the details because student confidentiality rules apply.

Malone stated his disappointment that parents feel the school site or district doesn’t take safety seriously, adding that the district has taken many steps to improve and provide for student safety.

The district and board review of the matter will cover whether the actions of the school administrators were consistent with the district’s own conduct code and California Education Code. Both codes support administrators making judgment calls on disciplinary actions based on several factors, which may also contain confidential student information.
