Veterans Appreciation Day Celebration At Fish Park

Veterans Appreciation Day Celebration At Fish Park

POSTED November 8, 2017 10:20 a.m.

An invitation has been extended to all veterans, their families, active military personnel and reservists and the entire community, urged to come together to observe Veterans Day with a special ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 11.

All are welcome to join in for a 1 p.m. service at the Veterans Monument in William A. Fish Veterans Park on Pontiac Street, at the corner of Cliffwood Way in Oakdale.

This is a day of appreciation for past, present and future veterans. The program will include guest speakers, music, a U.S. Flag retirement ceremony by the Boy Scouts and an ‘open mic’ session.

Seating is limited at the park so those planning to attend are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs.

Meanwhile, the Oakdale Lions Club will be putting up flags all over town in observance of the Veterans Day holiday on Saturday, placing them along F Street and on several side streets in the downtown business district for the day.

Prior to the afternoon ceremony in Oakdale, there will be a parade in neighboring Escalon, stepping off at 10:30 a.m. in that community, followed by a memorial service at the city’s Community Center.

Also in Escalon, the owner of Hula’s Restaurant will offer a free meal to veterans throughout the day, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the restaurant is on Jackson Avenue on the east end of town. No military ID will be required. Owner Tony Victorino hosted the ‘Vets Eat Free’ event last year and said he served up about 50 free meals for veterans.
