It has been a roller coaster week for the varsity girl’s water polo team. The team entered the 2017 Sac-Joaquin Section Championships as the eighth seed in Division I. On Halloween night the girls hosted the ninth seeded Jaguars of Gregori in the opening round where Oakdale won 11-5. Coming off the high of the first round victory the girls took on top seeded Davis on Thursday night. Davis played like the top seed and defeated Oakdale 18-2.

In the first round victory, Oakdale and Gregori went scoreless in the first quarter. Whitney Lee scored the first goal for Oakdale with 5:42 left in the half to go up 1-0. Then with the game tied at one, Bethany Metcalfe gave Oakdale the lead back with 2:46 remaining in the half. The final goal of the first half came from Kayla Peterson with 1:21 left to play.

With a 3-1 advantage, Daytona McGinnis scored as the shot clock expired to go up 4-1 with 5:36 left to play in the third. Lee scored her second goal of the game 30 seconds later to give Oakdale a 5-1 advantage in the third quarter. Gregori scored two unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 5-3. Lee found the net for a third time with 0:41 left in the third to boost the advantage to 6-3.

Oakdale’s offense heated up in the fourth quarter, scoring five goals. Peterson scored three of her team high four goals in the fourth. Metcalfe found the net twice in the fourth quarter to help Oakdale pull away. Goalkeeper Camryn O’Neal had over a dozen saves in the win.

The Lady Mustangs could not carry the momentum into the second round where they were shell shocked by the Blue Devils. Davis jumped out to an early lead and did not let up. Scoring for Oakdale were Dani Bench and Metcalfe, who finished the playoffs with four goals.
