Varsity Volleyball Girls Split Non-League Contests

Two games, two different outcomes for the OHS varsity volleyball team were featured on the court this past week. On Tuesday, Sept. 5 Oakdale defeated Escalon 3-2 in five sets but fell to Tracy on Thursday night at home 3-1 in non-conference action.

On the road Oakdale jumped out early on Escalon, winning the first two sets, 25-18, 25-21. The Cougars made it interesting winning the following two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-16. Oakdale head Coach Heather Gonzales calmed down the team and they returned back to the court focused and closed out the dramatic series 15-13 in the final set.

In the contest Alyssa Cogburn dished out 27 assists and an ace to help propel the girls to victory. Abigail Matoso contributed with seven kills and four aces for Oakdale. Kailee Whorton also added 33 digs in the win.

At home Oakdale could not find a successful rhythm against Tracy. The visitors took the first set 25-22, but Oakdale countered with a 25-21 second set victory. Tracy then shut down Oakdale in the third set 25-13 and closed out the Lady Mustangs in the fourth set 25-22. Caroline Hamilton led the way for Oakdale with 10 kills, two aces and two blocks.

Oakdale opened the Valley Oak League season on Monday, Sept. 11 at Sierra following The Leader’s press time. Today, Wednesday, Sept. 13 Oakdale hosts Manteca. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

 

JUNIOR VARSITY

The girls hosted the Oakdale Junior Varsity Invitational where schools from the surrounding area came to play on Saturday, Sept. 9. Oakdale placed fourth in the tournament after defeating Riverbank in the opening round 25-13. Oakdale then lost to Ripon and ultimately closed out the invitational with the fourth place finish. Oakdale clashed with Sierra to open VOL play Monday night following The Leader’s press time and will host Manteca Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.

 

FRESHMEN

The youngest of the three Oakdale volleyball teams defeated Escalon in three sets on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 25-14, 25-27, 15-7. Oakdale returned home on Thursday, Sept. 7 and defeated Tracy in straight sets 25-14, 25-14. Oakdale is scheduled to host Manteca on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
