Oakdale’s varsity Lady Mustangs girls’ basketball team improved to 5-1 on the young season after defeating the Summerville Bears 47-26 at Summerville and topping Livingston by a 46-32 final.

The Lady Mustangs, led by third year coach Justin Schwitters, opened their season on Dec. 3 with a 51-45 win at home against West of Tracy followed by a 60-56 road loss the next day to the Falcons of Atwater.

Since the defeat that left the Mustangs with a .500 record, Oakdale defeated Downey 37-32 on Dec. 6, routed Le Grand 65-27 and went on the road to defeat the Summerville Bears, rounding out their record at 5-1 entering the winter break.

Upcoming games are scheduled to include clashes at Golden Valley in Merced, Turlock and Johansen at home, before entering the Ripon Christian Tournament in Dec. 26, 27 and 28. The varsity Lady Mustangs open Valley Oak League play at Sierra on Jan. 8.

On the varsity boy’s side, Oakdale dropped a 52-51 nailbiter at home to the 3-4 Linden Lions in recent action.

They are gearing up now for the annual Oakdale Rotary Classic, scheduled over the holiday break and then have a game at Atwater on Jan. 2 and a home game against Tracy on Jan. 3 to tune up for Valley Oak League play.

Jeremy Fields, entering his seventh season as the Mustangs head coach, leads the Mustangs into VOL play on Jan. 7 against the Sierra Timberwolves of Manteca.
