Fall Sports Wrap - Aguilar, Sophomore Boys Win Titles

POSTED September 18, 2013 12:07 a.m.

A spectacular cross country showing highlighted recent prep action at Oakdale High. Following is a summary of results from multiple sports.

Cross Country

The rising Oakdale High cross country team got off on the right foot, and then the left foot, to start their season.

Oakdale varsity runners each landed top-5 team finishes at the competitive Sierra Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 14, while Kristin Aguilar captured freshman gold and Oakdale’s sophomore team won a collective title.

“When your runners come to you after the race and tell you they want more, you know you are going in the right direction,” Oakdale coach Guy Fowler said. “We had a great day.”

Fowler said it was Oakdale’s best performance at the meet since he took the reins in 2009. Every competing underclassman runner improved upon a previous personal best.

For the varsity programs, the three-mile race was a chance to shine. Isaiah Aguilar sped to a 17 minute, 29 second finish to land fourth, leading Oakdale to the same overall finish. Octavio Padilla (18:52), Mike Chapin (19:41), Brandon Basore (20:19) and Alvaro Torres (20:41) also ran well.

The girls ended fifth after a fifth place finish from Kyannah Hernandez (22:40). Viviana Aguilar (23:10) and Julianne Kummer (23:33) were not far behind her.

Both the freshman boys and girls ended second overall after sharp times on the two-mile course. Aguilar was the top girl at 13:31 while Esteban Villasenor (12:35) led frosh boys.

A bushel of sharp times by Jose De la Cruz (11:26), Oscar Casillas-Perez (11:28), Joshua Gorman (11:53), Ryan Poff (12:39), Garrett Ruthman (13:03) and Zane Neubaum (13:59) led the sophomore boys team to their race title.

“The kids are really starting to get how to be a runner and what it takes,” Fowler said.

Tennis

Oakdale ousted Lathrop 8-1 on Sept. 12 after singles wins by Christine Winders, Sabrina Richardson, Rachelle Pabalan and Katie Schultz. Cori Barney and Lilly Fabry kicked off doubles sweeps with 6-0 wins while Carley Newbill/Danika Brown and Quinn Gagos/Danielle Albertoni were unbeaten.

Golf

Oakdale slipped to a 269-322 defeat to Sonora on Sept. 12 despite a sharp 52-stroke effort by Dylanie Donahue. Bronte Lucero carded a 61 while Milan Latanzio shot 65, Bailey Zuk 69 and Melissa Koppinger 75.

Volleyball

Oakdale beat Enochs in three games after 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 scores on Sept. 12. Kaitlin Van Ryn had eight kills, eight digs and nine service points while Leah Burchell managed 20 digs and eight points. Nicole Descrochers added seven points and nine digs while Jennifer Guzman turned in six kills and Lauren Ott seven kills.

Saturday saw the Oakdale JV host their invitational tournament, though no statistics were available at press time.

Soccer

Oakdale’s junior varsity team rallied to a tournament championship recently at Gregori High after a 7-0 win over Johansen, a 4-0 shutout of Beyer, a 5-1 victory over Hughson and 1-0 defeat of Central Valley. Eleven JV players scored in the wins.

The varsity team tied Livingston 3-3 on Sept. 12 after goals by Davis Harper, Wesley Allen and Tony Ott. Harper, Trenton Pierson and Oskar Nilsson managed the assists. Jake Hicks had six saves and allowed no goals, while Zeke Spani saved four and allowed three.

Freshman Football

The Mustang freshmen rolled to their third straight win in 43-8 fashion over the junior varsity Ripon Christian Knights on Sept. 13. Sean Gingrich ran for three touchdowns while Jacob Galaviz ran in for two and Sam Haley fought for a lone score.

Coaches of all freshman and JV teams are reminded to submit game and/or tournament information to The Leader for publication in the following week’s issue.
