Everything that needed to fall into place did during the 48th Annual Oakdale Mens Invitational at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club June 25-27. Over 200 contestants showed up and competed in one of the strongest fields the area has seen in some time.
Fiscal woes have plagued other country clubs in the area, yet O.G.C.C. put together a tournament that clearly leaves no doubt as to which of the five area clubs is at the top of the ratings chart.
“This invitational was second to none,” tournament chairman Mike Stastny said. “People come to play from all over. We had guys come from Virginia, Texas and they come back every year and play in this tournament.
“We are so lucky to have this course in our community.”
The event went off without a hiccup, showing how well the camaraderie amongst the committee members, under General Manager Rick Schultz, makes for a quality three-day party.
“This is a total team effort,” Stastny said. “The committee does a lot of work and the general manager (Schultz), Mike Dowd the club pro, Mike Olson the golf course superintendent, Dan Quindt the head chef and food and beverage director all put a lot of work into it.
“That’s really where all the work is.”
There were over 100 different teams of two players (one club member and a guest) broken into four different flights. The flights were separated by teams’ handicaps with the lowest handicaps competing in the Bobby Jones flight.
The tournament saw Jamie Looper and guest Bob Blomberg finish with the Overall Low Gross score, while club member Brian Stewart and guest Brad McGhee finished with the Lowest Net score.
Scoring went on a point system with birdies and eagles proving to be most valuable. The three-day scores were combined to come up with winners in each flight.
The Bobby Jones Flight for 0-19.8 handicaps saw John Nelson and guest Tom Nelson take first place, while club member Tom Brennan and guest Dennis Vandermaaten finished in second.
The Ben Hogan Flight for 20-28.5 handicaps was taken down by Jeff Knot and guest Jerry Stokes, Jr. and member Lloyd Briscoe and guest Keith Braley earned a second place finish.
Handicaps from 28.8-35.9 fell into the Walter Hogan Flight, this group was won by club member Stan Colombo and guest Jamie Colombo, while second place was won by member Jim Fernandes and guest Dan Gustafson.
Gene Sarazen Flight for handicaps in excess of 36.3 was won by club member Jim DeBoer and guest Jeff Maggard, while member Bill Kull and guest Mike May earned a second place finish.
The Invitational was just another example of the O.G.C.C. pushing itself to the top of the Central Valley club memberships, said organizers.
“If you are a golfer,” Stastny said. “There is no better value than out here at Oakdale.”
