The familiar strains of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance filled the air on May 23, 2011 as the Valley Home eighth grade students made their entrance into the School Multipurpose Room for their Graduation Ceremony. Judah Burton, Nathan Soares and Luis Penaloza joined in rendering the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Kevin Hart welcomed parents and members of the audience to the ceremony.

We are happy to report that we have received good follow up reports on stolen property found due to the efforts of Farm Watch News Alert and Neighborhood Watch people. Residents need to keep on the alert and aid in preventing more such crimes from occurring.

History has been made in Valley Home on Sunday, May 15th with the first party held in the new Valley Home Community Park. The event was a birthday party for Ethan Butler, who has just turned 2 years old. Ethan has an older brother, Noah and his parents are John and Christina Butler. Our Valley Home young people have been making good use of the nice weather we enjoyed for a while. We received word that Melissa Koppinger has been enjoying an opportunity to play some golf. Way to go Melissa! Melissa's twin sister, Melinda is having an absolute awesome season playing softball at Oakdale High School. Valley Home is proud of you both!

Time flies! The year has been a busy one for our Valley Home 4-H members! Our 4-H president, Halley Smith reminds members that Record books are due at the June meeting. Halley states that there are no exceptions. Members must turn in a record book on time to be considered a member in good standing. You must be a member in good standing to enter and show at the County Fair, and have your current 4-H year count. Primary members do not need to complete a record book but they may complete a primary record. See Sally Chrisman for help ...

The weather turned out great on Saturday for the 4-H sponsored Easter Egg Hunt and a good number of egg hunters showed up for the fun event! Our 4-H Easter Bunny helpers did a great job hiding the eggs on the grounds of the "old" school and the weather couldn't have been better for the hunt. The eggs were dyed and decorated by the 4-H'ers in Chairman Jenna Heaton and Cody Bartholomew's barn and afterward the kids all enjoyed a marshmallow roast out by the fire.

There was an error by your reporter in last week's column concerning the meeting of the Valley Home Municipal Advisory Council, the date for the meeting is tonight, April 20th, and begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the library located at the "old" campus on Texas Avenue. The meeting will have a speaker from STARS who will speak on the Farm Watch Program. All interested residents need to be there. You could save some valuable property if you follow their suggestions.

We offer an important reminder to Valley Home residents that if you have not already done so be sure to plan to attend the Valley Home Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) this evening at 6:30 p.m. A STARS volunteer for the Farm Watch program will speak about Owner Applied Numbers for the Farm Watch program. We have received important information from Nancy Osmundson, Chairperson for our Valley Home Mac meetings to be sure to circle Wednesday, April 20 on your calendars and plan to attend a very important meeting for our Neighborhood Watch program. Nancy has spoken with the STARS volunteers and invited them to our Valley Home Mac meeting. We will have a member from that group scheduled to speak about the Owner Applied Numbers for the Farm Watch program.

Our Valley Home area was host to one of the most beautiful almond blossom displays we have enjoyed for several years. Those trees on Pioneer Avenue near Highway 120 were exceptionally pretty and seemed to last the longest.

We are starting this week's column off with an exciting news item that arrived too late to include in last week's column. This news was sent to us by proud parents, Synthia and Dennis Jones. "The Salisbury, North Carolina Davis & Elkins softball team opened the 2011 season in strong fashion Friday afternoon, February 23rd, as they defeated Winston-Salem State University 11-3 in the Catawba College Tournament." Our Oakdale High Football team was well represented this past Saturday at Levi's Stadium! Mustang colors dominated the crowd with the opposing colors of Buffalo green being not so dominant. The game was a thriller with our Mustangs coming out on top. Our cheerleaders and football players were brilliant and represented our area with tremendous pride and hard work. Go Mustangs!

Our fall scarecrow contest is off to a great start ... remember all entry forms must be turned in by this Friday, October 10th! If you do not have an entry form and would like to enter call Cooper Bartholomew at 209-985-5233. Prizes will be awarded at our annual Valley Home School Harvest Festival on October 25th. It's not too early to mark your calendars for October 25th. That is when our Valley Home School will host their annual Fall Harvest Festival! The festival is an important fundraiser for the school and all proceeds directly benefit our Valley Home students. There will be a huge silent auction, giant pumpkin contest, scarecrow contest, pumpkin patch, delicious food, pies, games, and tons of other exciting fun. Don't forget that St. John's/St. Luke's Church will be having a yard sale, bake sale, and enchilada sale on Friday, August 29 and Saturday, August 30 at the Church, 8 a.m. on Friday and 7 a.m. on Saturday.
