We couldn't ask for a nicer day weather-wise than what we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon when volunteers gathered at the Valley Home Community Park for a tree planting. Bud Ferreila drove his truck carrying a power auger and parked next to our Community Park, then went to work digging a spot for the planting of the Colorado Blue Spruce which is now the official Valley Home Community Christmas Tree. Valley Home residents were saddened to receive word that long time resident of our community, John De Boer passed away on April 13, 2012. John was very active in our community and farm organizations and was the recipient of many awards for his services. He had a long time involvement with the Farm Bureau. One of the most notable accomplishments while he was on the board was helping to write the Williamson Act. This coming Thursday, April 5th, rain or shine, our Valley Home community will echo to the to the sound of jogging feet as our Valley Home students participate in the annual school Jog-A-Thon, at the Pioneer Ave. campus. We always enjoy taking a step back in Valley Home history when winter doldrums seem to arrive in our community. What a thrill to see our Valley Home Community almond tree orchards burst out in a gorgeous array of blossoms the past couple of weeks. The almond trees weren't the only beautiful trees flaunting gorgeous blossoms. Ornamental plums, Magnolia trees and flowering shrubs rapidly followed suit adding to the array of color. The sight of all the flowering trees is one of the many things that make living in Valley Home such a great pleasure.

Valley Home 4-H members can take a well-deserved big bow! We received word this week that the club sponsored Valentine Box Social was a great success. Word has been received that there were lots of baked goodies and other various items on hand at the club's annual fun filled event! Club members' delicious boxed desserts raised a little over $1,000 for the Club's treasury. The announcer was Ashley Barreto and Hallie Smith showed off her great talent as auctioneer. The Valley Home Community Center board of directors had a meeting at the park last week to discuss the pending items for the community park and to discuss plans for the rest of the year. How lucky can you get? Electrician, Mike Burghardt, who is employed by Square D, Co., recently returned from working on electrical problems at a Naval facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mike, when he had finished with his work, was able to enjoy some free time exploring the waters around the island with our grandson, Jeff. There will be an important meeting of the Valley Home MAC this evening, February 1st. Our three new council members, Winnie Mullins, Kate Hart and Chris Hempleman will be sworn in by County District One Supervisor William O'Brien. Heading the list of items to be discussed by the group will be a report on the mold situation discovered at the Valley Home Fire House, which has been the reason behind the closing of our station. Oak Valley Art Society members enjoyed an interesting program at their monthly meeting on Saturday which featured an interesting program by Escalon artist, Dorothy Girling and her husband Bob. Dorothy displayed some of her work and gave suggestions on the use and care of various art mediums. Bob spoke on the best way to ready paintings for hanging, using plastic tubing to cover frame wire to keep from damaging the painting. Dorothy also leads a sketching class one afternoon a week at the Escalon library which has proven very beneficial to those interested in improving their drawing skills.

We have received word that two horses were lost on Friday night right on Valley Home Road near Pleasant Valley Road as a gate was left open. One is a sorrel warm blood and the other is a small bay. It was birthday time in Valley Home as Garret Lee celebrated his big day! Garret and his friends and family enjoyed an afternoon of indoor swimming at Modesto Aquatics this past Saturday. The seventh grader and his guests were treated to pizza following their afternoon in the heated pool. It was a wonderful birthday and we wish Garret many happy returns of his special day!

It was back to school this past week for our Valley Home school students. Looking for a bright spot, the students were excited to learn they would have a vacation day on January 9th and also on January 19th! January 9th was a staff development day and January 19th is Martin Luther King Jr. day. On January 21st there will be a teacher collaboration meeting at 3:00pm. Family and friends were treated to a most special evening this past Friday night! The afterschool program presented a delightful Christmas program filled with magic and holiday spirit.
