The familiar strains of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance filled the air on May 23, 2011 as the Valley Home eighth grade students made their entrance into the School Multipurpose Room for their Graduation Ceremony. Judah Burton, Nathan Soares and Luis Penaloza joined in rendering the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Kevin Hart welcomed parents and members of the audience to the ceremony.

History has been made in Valley Home on Sunday, May 15th with the first party held in the new Valley Home Community Park. The event was a birthday party for Ethan Butler, who has just turned 2 years old. Ethan has an older brother, Noah and his parents are John and Christina Butler. Time flies! The year has been a busy one for our Valley Home 4-H members! Our 4-H president, Halley Smith reminds members that Record books are due at the June meeting. Halley states that there are no exceptions. Members must turn in a record book on time to be considered a member in good standing. You must be a member in good standing to enter and show at the County Fair, and have your current 4-H year count. Primary members do not need to complete a record book but they may complete a primary record. See Sally Chrisman for help ...

The weather turned out great on Saturday for the 4-H sponsored Easter Egg Hunt and a good number of egg hunters showed up for the fun event! Our 4-H Easter Bunny helpers did a great job hiding the eggs on the grounds of the "old" school and the weather couldn't have been better for the hunt. The eggs were dyed and decorated by the 4-H'ers in Chairman Jenna Heaton and Cody Bartholomew's barn and afterward the kids all enjoyed a marshmallow roast out by the fire.

There was an error by your reporter in last week's column concerning the meeting of the Valley Home Municipal Advisory Council, the date for the meeting is tonight, April 20th, and begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the library located at the "old" campus on Texas Avenue. The meeting will have a speaker from STARS who will speak on the Farm Watch Program. All interested residents need to be there. You could save some valuable property if you follow their suggestions.

"The Salisbury, North Carolina Davis & Elkins softball team opened the 2011 season in strong fashion Friday afternoon, February 23rd, as they defeated Winston-Salem State University 11-3 in the Catawba College Tournament." Our Red Hatters enjoy selecting a different restaurant each month to visit and enjoy lunch while attending to club business and formulating plans for various projects and activities. All those who attended the Silent Movies on Sunday at St. Luke'' Lutheran Church here in Valley Home were in for a special treat. Valley Home students and families enjoyed a free family fun night Friday night in the gym. Thanks to the City of Oakdale, a giant inflatable movie screen was set up in the gym and everyone enjoyed "Monsters, Inc." Thanks to Steves Chevrolet, fresh popcorn popped all night and was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Chad Tienken for operating the movie and sound so professionally. Our deepest sympathy to the Tony Taro family on the loss of the family matriarch, Claire Taro. Claire was devoted to her family and her home. Many of her friends referred to her as a truly grand lady. Claire made her family and home her priority. She could always be found cooking, cleaning or working in her garden. Claire was also known for her hospitality to friends and family. Valley Home will miss Claire very much.

Our Valley Home Hawks celebrated their annual Jog-A-Thon last Thursday. The Easter Bunny was on hand to watch the kids run and walk. It was obvious that everyone had some fun. After the jogging, the candy jump was held and the prizes were awarded. Maddie Jones' name was drawn as the winner of the iPad Mini device. The best decorated T-shirt awards went to Brandy Seaton for the K-3 grades and Stephanie Lee for the 4-8 grades. It is that time of year once again when our Valley Home students are stretching their legs and toning up their muscles for the school annual Jog-a-Thon on Thursday, March 28th. Students are decorating their own T-shirts again this year. We have received word that prizes will be awarded for the best T-shirt design for both K-3 and 4 thru 8. Valley Home 4-H Annual Club Presentation Night will be held on Thursday, March 21 at St John's Church here in Valley Home. The Presentation will commence at 6 p.m. in the Church Hall. This week's Valley Home News leads off with the news received that Bob Yuskaitis our Valley Home friend and dedicated Neighborhood Watch Patrolman for our community was involved in a serious automobile accident on February 11th while crossing Highway 120 at Pioneer Avenue. It appears he was driving home after an evening patrol and his and another vehicle collided, with his car rolled and he received serious, multiple injuries. He is recuperating in a facility in Modesto. The residents of the Greater Valley Home Area wish Bob Yuskailis a full recovery.

It sounds like our Valley Home 4-Hers not only had a great time at their February meeting, but also made lots of money at their annual Box Social on February 5th.
