We received word from Tammie Smith that our Valley Home 4-H'ers are currently all busy getting ready for the Stanislaus County Fair. Tammie reminds us that with the ending of the Oakdale Junior Livestock Boosters which helped purchase the market animals, many kids are without buyers for their animals at the Fair, this year. If anyone is interested in buying an animal or helping a 4H'er they should contact Tammie at 604-6942.

Let's have a big round of applause for Valley Home 4-H'ers, Samuel Fletcher, Heidi Schaefle and Jenny Schaefle who competed in 4-H State Presentations on May 28th during the State 4-H Field Day at UC Davis. They worked diligently for several months on their presentations, earning gold awards at the county and regional levels which entitled them to compete in State Presentation Day. In Sam's demonstration titled "Ready, Aim, Fire" he taught the audience how to make a sling shot out of a "V" shaped tree branch. Heidi's prepared informational speech, "Rude Awakening" educated the audience ...

History has been made again in Valley Home with the dedication of the new Valley Home Community Center Park on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Music filled the air thanks to new Valley Home resident D.J. Ken Soffiotto and his Cruiser Music Productions. The wonderful aroma of steak and chicken sandwiches prepared by Jerome Food Catering of Valley Home greeted visitors as they arrived at the park. Attendees soon found out that there was more to remember about the food than the aroma, it was outstanding.

The familiar strains of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance filled the air on May 23, 2011 as the Valley Home eighth grade students made their entrance into the School Multipurpose Room for their Graduation Ceremony. Judah Burton, Nathan Soares and Luis Penaloza joined in rendering the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal Kevin Hart welcomed parents and members of the audience to the ceremony.

History has been made in Valley Home on Sunday, May 15th with the first party held in the new Valley Home Community Park. The event was a birthday party for Ethan Butler, who has just turned 2 years old. Ethan has an older brother, Noah and his parents are John and Christina Butler. Time flies! The year has been a busy one for our Valley Home 4-H members! Our 4-H president, Halley Smith reminds members that Record books are due at the June meeting. Halley states that there are no exceptions. Members must turn in a record book on time to be considered a member in good standing. You must be a member in good standing to enter and show at the County Fair, and have your current 4-H year count. Primary members do not need to complete a record book but they may complete a primary record. See Sally Chrisman for help ...

The weather turned out great on Saturday for the 4-H sponsored Easter Egg Hunt and a good number of egg hunters showed up for the fun event! Our 4-H Easter Bunny helpers did a great job hiding the eggs on the grounds of the "old" school and the weather couldn't have been better for the hunt. The eggs were dyed and decorated by the 4-H'ers in Chairman Jenna Heaton and Cody Bartholomew's barn and afterward the kids all enjoyed a marshmallow roast out by the fire.

There was an error by your reporter in last week's column concerning the meeting of the Valley Home Municipal Advisory Council, the date for the meeting is tonight, April 20th, and begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the library located at the "old" campus on Texas Avenue. The meeting will have a speaker from STARS who will speak on the Farm Watch Program. All interested residents need to be there. You could save some valuable property if you follow their suggestions.

A bad break ... Just as irrigation season is beginning our wonderful hard working neighbor Darlene Nunes suffered a broken foot. The break was very serious and will really be hard on Darlene. The Nunes family is well known throughout our Valley Home community for their dedication to this rural way of life we all love so much! Our Valley Home 4-Hers met last evening for their monthly community meeting. The 4-Hers are holding a drive thru Tri Tip dinner this Friday evening. VALLEY HOME NEWS- 2-25-15

This week we salute a local hero. Gene Benedix was wounded in combat in 1951 during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart commendation. He never received the actual Purple Heart medal. There will be a special presentation by Congressman Jeff Denham on April 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Gladys Lemmons Senior Center to present this medal. Please try to attend. The dinner is a fundraiser for the Asilomar field trip costs! We send our heartfelt sympathy to our Knights Ferry neighbors. Once again this small tight knit community has lost one of their own. Glenda Maisel passed away very suddenly this past week. Glenda and her husband Rick owned and operated the historic Knights Ferry General Store, Bar and Glenda's Deli.
