We were thrilled this week to receive a surprise visit from our Knights Ferry friend Maizie Brown. Years ago, along with many other dedicated folks, Maizie worked tirelessly to help get the measure passed that would provide Rural Fire with much needed funds. We were so happy to have her visit us here in Valley Home. Maizie is a special and much respected friend within both the Valley Home and Knights Ferry communities. Our gratitude to you Maizie and to all of those who years ago served on the Oakdale Fire Committee, walked areas, knocked on doors and made tons ...
We begin this week's column with a special Happy Birthday to a gentleman who has worked tirelessly for our Valley Home community. Mr. Glenn Burghardt celebrates his big day during the month of May! Glenn and his lovely wife Laura have volunteered countless hours, and have been involved in most of the committees, events, work days, etc. that help make Valley Home such a special place to live. Glenn, we appreciate everything you do. Happy Birthday to our good friend ... Go Navy!
Looking across the freshly mowed grass of Valley Home school one could easily feel the pride the 100-plus year old institution instills within our community. The sky was a beautiful blue and filled with wispy white clouds that floated with the morning breeze, the kind you feel like you could just reach up and touch. It was the day before Easter and the Valley Home 4-Hers had hidden over 600 brightly decorated eggs throughout the school yard. As the warm morning sun peeked down, you could hear the children's excited laughter as they ran from one hidden egg to ...
In this week's column we pay tribute to a very special man...our friend Mark Dickens. Mark was a true Valley Home boy who grew up to be one of the kindest and most generous friends a person could wish for. One could write pages and pages trying to describe the effect Mark had on the people of Valley Home, Oakdale, and the many places he visited. He was a special man who made a difference in so many lives. You could meet Mark one time and realize he would forever be your friend. He had a firm, but ...

We dedicate this column to the memory of our dear friend Claire Taro. Claire's passing one year ago left a tremendous void in her family and for us here in Valley Home. Claire was the cherished wife of Valley Home rancher Tony Taro and much loved mother of Don and Vicki. Claire was well respected for her gracious manners and sweet personality. She is deeply missed by all and will be remembered fondly.
We hope everyone is planning to help with "Love Valley Home" this weekend. This is a great opportunity to work together for our community. Meet at the school/park at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and/or Sunday, April 5th and 6th.

It made for an exciting game of basketball when good friends Tom Cassinetto and Randy Russell met up this past Thursday at Valley Home School. Valley Home School Math teacher Cory Reid held a very informative meeting regarding the new approach to Mathematics at the sixth grade level. Common Core, as it is known, will be more hands-on and in-depth. Rather than rushing through each lesson in order to meet standards, teachers will be able to slow down a bit in an effort to ensure that each student is learning and understanding the concept. Tests will now be taken online and are reported to be very difficult. Although there are challenges ahead we have high hopes that Common Core will bring positive results. We are ...
Valley Home fourth grader Maddie Jones took her History assignment "Create a California Mission" to the family kitchen! Maddie used her cooking skills and her imagination to bake and decorate a very tasty mission. Maddie's teacher Robin Cole was very impressed and her classmates were thrilled to be able to munch on Maddie's delicious California mission. Great job Maddie!
