Valley Home News for May 23, 2012

Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade all enjoyed field trips this past week. Previously, 5th-8th grade traveled to San Francisco to visit the Planetarium in Golden Gate Park. The field trips were funded by our Valley Home PTC through their fundraising efforts with See's Candy and Gold Canyon Candle sales. A big Thank You to our parents and community for your support to make these extra enrichment activities possible.

Once again it is that time of year when Valley Home residents can look forward to a delightful step back in time, relax, sit back and enjoy a Sunday afternoon of good old fashioned silent film comedy. We have received word from Sharon Hofmann that St. John's Lutheran Church here in Valley Home is preparing to host their Seventh Annual Silent Movie, on Sunday, June 3 at 3 p.m.

We couldn't ask for a nicer day weather-wise than what we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon when volunteers gathered at the Valley Home Community Park for a tree planting. Bud Ferreila drove his truck carrying a power auger and parked next to our Community Park, then went to work digging a spot for the planting of the Colorado Blue Spruce which is now the official Valley Home Community Christmas Tree. Valley Home residents were saddened to receive word that long time resident of our community, John De Boer passed away on April 13, 2012. John was very active in our community and farm organizations and was the recipient of many awards for his services. He had a long time involvement with the Farm Bureau. One of the most notable accomplishments while he was on the board was helping to write the Williamson Act. This coming Thursday, April 5th, rain or shine, our Valley Home community will echo to the to the sound of jogging feet as our Valley Home students participate in the annual school Jog-A-Thon, at the Pioneer Ave. campus. We always enjoy taking a step back in Valley Home history when winter doldrums seem to arrive in our community. What a thrill to see our Valley Home Community almond tree orchards burst out in a gorgeous array of blossoms the past couple of weeks. The almond trees weren't the only beautiful trees flaunting gorgeous blossoms. Ornamental plums, Magnolia trees and flowering shrubs rapidly followed suit adding to the array of color. The sight of all the flowering trees is one of the many things that make living in Valley Home such a great pleasure.

Valley Home 4-H members can take a well-deserved big bow! We received word this week that the club sponsored Valentine Box Social was a great success. Word has been received that there were lots of baked goodies and other various items on hand at the club's annual fun filled event! How lucky can you get? Electrician, Mike Burghardt, who is employed by Square D, Co., recently returned from working on electrical problems at a Naval facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mike, when he had finished with his work, was able to enjoy some free time exploring the waters around the island with our grandson, Jeff. Your reporter attended the Valley Home Joint School District Graduation on Tuesday evening May 21, 2013. The ceremony held in the school multi-purpose room was quite pleasant and the attractive decoration plants were provided by the Knudsen Nursery. The traditional processional music, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance brought the fifteen graduates to chairs at the front. Ciara Mitchell, Juana Glover and Juan Cabrera lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag followed by a welcome from School Superintendent Mrs. Desrosiers-Lewis.

All those who attended the Silent Movies on Sunday at St. Luke'' Lutheran Church here in Valley Home were in for a special treat. Valley Home students and families enjoyed a free family fun night Friday night in the gym. Thanks to the City of Oakdale, a giant inflatable movie screen was set up in the gym and everyone enjoyed "Monsters, Inc." Thanks to Steves Chevrolet, fresh popcorn popped all night and was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Chad Tienken for operating the movie and sound so professionally. Our deepest sympathy to the Tony Taro family on the loss of the family matriarch, Claire Taro. Claire was devoted to her family and her home. Many of her friends referred to her as a truly grand lady. Claire made her family and home her priority. She could always be found cooking, cleaning or working in her garden. Claire was also known for her hospitality to friends and family. Valley Home will miss Claire very much.

Our Valley Home Hawks celebrated their annual Jog-A-Thon last Thursday. The Easter Bunny was on hand to watch the kids run and walk. It was obvious that everyone had some fun. After the jogging, the candy jump was held and the prizes were awarded. Maddie Jones' name was drawn as the winner of the iPad Mini device. The best decorated T-shirt awards went to Brandy Seaton for the K-3 grades and Stephanie Lee for the 4-8 grades. It is that time of year once again when our Valley Home students are stretching their legs and toning up their muscles for the school annual Jog-a-Thon on Thursday, March 28th. This week's Valley Home News leads off with the news received that Bob Yuskaitis our Valley Home friend and dedicated Neighborhood Watch Patrolman for our community was involved in a serious automobile accident on February 11th while crossing Highway 120 at Pioneer Avenue. It appears he was driving home after an evening patrol and his and another vehicle collided, with his car rolled and he received serious, multiple injuries. He is recuperating in a facility in Modesto. The residents of the Greater Valley Home Area wish Bob Yuskailis a full recovery.

It sounds like our Valley Home 4-Hers not only had a great time at their February meeting, but also made lots of money at their annual Box Social on February 5th.
