What a thrill to see our Valley Home Community almond tree orchards burst out in a gorgeous array of blossoms the past couple of weeks. The almond trees weren't the only beautiful trees flaunting gorgeous blossoms. Ornamental plums, Magnolia trees and flowering shrubs rapidly followed suit adding to the array of color. The sight of all the flowering trees is one of the many things that make living in Valley Home such a great pleasure.

Valley Home 4-H members can take a well-deserved big bow! We received word this week that the club sponsored Valentine Box Social was a great success. Word has been received that there were lots of baked goodies and other various items on hand at the club's annual fun filled event! Club members' delicious boxed desserts raised a little over $1,000 for the Club's treasury. The announcer was Ashley Barreto and Hallie Smith showed off her great talent as auctioneer. The Valley Home Community Center board of directors had a meeting at the park last week to discuss the pending items for the community park and to discuss plans for the rest of the year. Present were Chairman Don Taro, Secretary/Treasurer Glenn Burghardt, and members Winnie Mullins and Ralph Damante. Member Roger Beymer was ill and missed the meeting.

How lucky can you get? Electrician, Mike Burghardt, who is employed by Square D, Co., recently returned from working on electrical problems at a Naval facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mike, when he had finished with his work, was able to enjoy some free time exploring the waters around the island with our grandson, Jeff. There will be an important meeting of the Valley Home MAC this evening, February 1st. Our three new council members, Winnie Mullins, Kate Hart and Chris Hempleman will be sworn in by County District One Supervisor William O'Brien. Heading the list of items to be discussed by the group will be a report on the mold situation discovered at the Valley Home Fire House, which has been the reason behind the closing of our station. Oak Valley Art Society members enjoyed an interesting program at their monthly meeting on Saturday which featured an interesting program by Escalon artist, Dorothy Girling and her husband Bob. Dorothy displayed some of her work and gave suggestions on the use and care of various art mediums. Bob spoke on the best way to ready paintings for hanging, using plastic tubing to cover frame wire to keep from damaging the painting. Dorothy also leads a sketching class one afternoon a week at the Escalon library which has proven very beneficial to those interested in improving their drawing skills.

We have received word that two horses were lost on Friday night right on Valley Home Road near Pleasant Valley Road as a gate was left open. One is a sorrel warm blood and the other is a small bay. Valley Home residents began the New Year by welcoming in the new Superintendent/Principal for Valley Home School, Mrs. Rolanda Desrosiers-Lewis, to replace former Superintendent/Principal, Kevin Hart. The first official day for the new Principal began on Tuesday, January 3, as she welcomed the return of our Valley Home students from winter break. Mrs. Desrosiers-Lewis has the distinction of being the first woman to be placed as superintendent/principal for Valley Home School. A report was received from Claire Taro that their daughter Vickie and son-in-law Leo Albers picked she and Tony up in their pickup on December 9th and drove them to Fernley, Nevada where their granddaughter Kristen and husband Joey Volene live with children 13 year old Rebecca and 11 year old Mathew. On Saturday the group went to a piano recital by their great-granddaughter Rebecca who has been taking piano lessons for a year or so. She has been doing well and her performance of three songs included Skateboard Boogie. Her great-grandparents are so proud of her.

Christina and Ashley Barreto, bring us up to date on the 4-H Fundraiser that was held at Tractor supply on Saturday, November 19th; it was a great success! The group offered lots of wonderful goodies and raised $666.73 for the club. Valley Home 4-Hers held their annual Christmas party this week. It was filled with lots of laughter and tons of fun. The Valley Home Hawks welcomed the Knights Ferry football and volleyball teams this past Friday. Both teams played great and had a great time. Once again Mr. Mike had the field looking great even adding red, white and blue in the end zones. Valley Home would like to thank Knights Ferry for making the trip to play the Hawks. The Valley Home Hawks volleyball and football teams were all in action this past Friday. All teams did very well, everyone played hard, and everyone including the spectators had a great time. Special thanks to our coaches and a huge thank you to custodian Mike for getting the field ready for game day. Glenn and Laura Burghardt's grandson Ryan Burghardt was home this weekend for a very special occasion. Art and Tami Tharpe held their annual lobster feed and Ryan brought good friend Anna Laura to meet Tami. Tami was Ryan's first and second grade teacher and has had a tremendous influence on Ryan's life. It seemed more like a party among friends rather than a weekend yard sale! Our Valley Home Community Park was alive with friends, neighbors and folks who quickly became friends! This past Saturday the park played host to a very well-attended yard sale. The event raised much needed funds to maintain the park throughout the year.
