The first week of school has come and gone. For our family it was a time of many firsts! We counted our blessings as little Millie started her first day of Kindergarten ... a smart, patient and kind teacher made her first day perfect, she couldn't wait to go back. Hope that lasts when she actually has to do school work! Grandson Cooper was off to his first day at the "big" campus. That's where Valley Home fourth graders go! It's about two minutes away from the little campus but for Cooper it represents being a big kid ...

Ryan was a true Valley Home boy growing up along with his beloved brothers Randy and Danny Russell in Valley Home. Ryan was a tremendous musician with many devoted fans throughout the area. He leaves behind many, many friends who were family to him. Ryan is the much loved son ...

Kindness from unknown friends ... Last week I received the most beautiful card, it came by mail and was inscribed with a very caring, "with sympathy" message. It immediately lifted my spirits and once again I felt truly blessed to be surrounded by kind and caring folks. This card came from Lyn and Ken Cosner and their staff at River Oak Pharmacy. I have always read Ken's informational tidbits in the Leader and a few months ago our family had a hard to find medicine need, River Oak Pharmacy was the one place that could immediately provide what we needed ...

With vacations and summer getaways in full force, it is important that we are aware of any suspicious activity within our community. Our Valley Home community is very well protected, because neighbors have always looked out for each other! If you do notice something that doesn't seem right, be sure to call our neighborhood watch captain, Ryan Cope. Ryan can be reached by email at ryancope@sbcglobal.net or by phone at 209-840-1306.

A garden well tended ... a life well lived ... in this week's column I would like to honor the memory of the strong, kind man who had made my life so happy for the last 47 years. I was just seventeen when I met Richard, on a warm autumn evening while cruising the avenue with friends. It didn't take long for us to become the very best of friends. One month later our engagement was announced during a lovely Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve at his parent's home. I turned eighteen in January, he would be nineteen that ...

We have sad news this week in Valley Home. Richard Mullins, husband of Winnie, passed away suddenly on Saturday afternoon at their home. He was a strong, quiet man with a great sense of humor who loved and cared for his family. The family wants to thank all those who helped: ditch tenders, paramedics, firefighters and sheriff. Richard will be sorely missed.
