We are happy to share the latest information on Valley Home 4-H activities. Let's give Christina Berreto and Rosie Campbell and their bake sale committee members a big thank you! They raised $146.50 at their November 13th bake sale and $294.00 at their December 11 bake sale. Special plaudits also to everyone who donated items to be sold! Sounds like everyone did a super job!

Our Valley Home School students are looking forward to a fun filled week of activities. Starting off the week, Monday will offer them an exciting preview only of the gift items which will be available to purchase for family members at the much anticipated annual Valley Home PTC sponsored Christmas Store. The Christmas Store will feature a variety of gift items which are available for students to purchase for their family members. Not only are students able to purchase gift items for a nominal fee, but members of the Valley Home PTC will be on hand to wrap the selections ...

The Valley Home School PTC meeting has been moved to tomorrow, December 9th at 3 p.m. in Mrs. Moore's classroom with babysitting available in Mrs. Rathbun's class. All are invited as we will be talking about our budget ideas for the PTC funds. It would be nice to have 3 budget ideas from each member to discuss at the meeting.

The redwood picnic tables for the Valley Home Community Center Park have arrived and they are beautiful! Eight of them were handmade by a supplier living in Chinese Camp and this brings to mind an almost unbelievable bit of historical connection. In the early history of this area and before Oakdale became a town with its own post office, the residents here resided in Camp Washington. A search for the location of this site would lead you to Chinese Camp as it was the post office headquarters for this large Enumeration District. So 150 years later the connection is re-kindled ...

Your reporter is honored to announce that we have a winner in our community. Valley Home resident Joseph Perez participated in the 2010 Annual SIR State Poppy Hills Individual Championship Golf Tournament at the Poppy Hills course along the coast in Monterey on October 27 and October 28. The weather was beautiful and the Monterey coastline welcomed the large group of golfers. Thursday's playing prepared the participants for the championship playing on Friday and when the final scores were tallied and posted on the SIR State Golf website it showed that out of the 72 golfers in the tournament ...

Valley Home residents are still basking in the glow of all the fun enjoyed at this year's Harvest Festival. The results for the following contests held during the festival were not available in time for last week's column and we include them now. Judges for the Scarecrow contest had the fun of driving through our Valley Home area and enjoying viewing the displays close at hand. There were four exhibits for judges to view this year. The judges felt that "Fall Clean Up" created by Wyatt, Emma & Marybeth Carpenter was outstanding. It showed a pumpkin-headed scarecrow type farmer ...

Rain certainly didn't dampen the spirits of everyone attending the Valley Home Harvest Festivities on Saturday afternoon. There was lots to see and do at the Festival. Excitement ran high at the pumpkin judging booth with pumpkins of all sizes and shapes on display. The five pumpkin contests were coordinated by Jenna Heaton and Valley Home 4-H and sponsored by Mid Valley Agriculture Services. First place in the Giant Pumpkin went to Angel Soto for her monster entry which weighed in at 132 1/2 lbs after cleaning out insides. Alexis Halsey's 125 lb. beauty placed second, with ...

Valley Home 4-H is looking for the "Great Pumpkin" this Saturday at our Valley Home School Harvest Festival. Judges will be searching for the "Biggest Pumpkin," "Strangest Shape Pumpkin" and the most Perfect Pumpkin." We also understand that there will be a contest for the best "Carved Pumpkin!" Our community is in for a real treat this Saturday! So all of you pumpkin growers start searching your pumpkin patch for your special pumpkins and bring them to the school at 2:00 p.m. this Coming Saturday. Approximately 95 people were spotted at Art and Tami Tharpe's ranch on Pioneer Avenue where they had gathered to enjoy an evening of good food and succulent lobster just arrived from Maine for the special occasion. Threatening rain clouds scudded across the evening sky but failed to dampen the spirits of the group, all of whom enjoyed great food and the opportunity to visit with old friends. Valley Home 4-H held a meeting on Tuesday, October 5th in the gym at Valley Home School and final sign up for projects was held. More people are needed to sign up to help work at the Valley Home Harvest Festival and also for helping to lay sod at the Valley Home Park. Congratulations go out to the following Valley Home students who earned the title of Student's of the Month for August! The honor of being proclaimed Student of the Month rewarded the students with personal recognition with all students in attendance for the ceremony. A bad break ... Just as irrigation season is beginning our wonderful hard working neighbor Darlene Nunes suffered a broken foot. The break was very serious and will really be hard on Darlene. The Nunes family is well known throughout our Valley Home community for their dedication to this rural way of life we all love so much! Darlene and Alvin just give a holler if you need anything ... you know you have a community that thinks the world of you both and is ready to help in any way needed!

This week is an exciting week for future kindergarten students at Valley Home School! Today, Wednesday March 11, is registration day! It's always such a big day for the youngsters and parents alike ... It's a bittersweet time for many parents as they realize how quickly their little one is growing. Registration will be held on the Texas Avenue campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Our Valley Home 4-Hers met last evening for their monthly community meeting. The 4-Hers are holding a drive thru Tri Tip dinner this Friday evening. The Tri Tip will be smoked and the dinner will have sides of beans, dinner rolls and salad. The dinner will serve a family of four and the cost is $35. VALLEY HOME NEWS- 2-25-15

This week we salute a local hero. Gene Benedix was wounded in combat in 1951 during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart commendation. He never received the actual Purple Heart medal. There will be a special presentation by Congressman Jeff Denham on April 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Gladys Lemmons Senior Center to present this medal. Please try to attend.
