We always enjoy taking a step back in Valley Home history when winter doldrums seem to arrive in our community. Let's take a giant step back into 1944, serving during World War II in the month of December to be specific, and take glimpse of what some of our young male residents were doing during that time period. What a thrill to see our Valley Home Community almond tree orchards burst out in a gorgeous array of blossoms the past couple of weeks. The almond trees weren't the only beautiful trees flaunting gorgeous blossoms. Ornamental plums, Magnolia trees and flowering shrubs rapidly followed suit adding to the array of color. The sight of all the flowering trees is one of the many things that make living in Valley Home such a great pleasure.

Valley Home 4-H members can take a well-deserved big bow! We received word this week that the club sponsored Valentine Box Social was a great success. Word has been received that there were lots of baked goodies and other various items on hand at the club's annual fun filled event! Club members' delicious boxed desserts raised a little over $1,000 for the Club's treasury. The announcer was Ashley Barreto and Hallie Smith showed off her great talent as auctioneer. The Valley Home Community Center board of directors had a meeting at the park last week to discuss the pending items for the community park and to discuss plans for the rest of the year. Present were Chairman Don Taro, Secretary/Treasurer Glenn Burghardt, and members Winnie Mullins and Ralph Damante. Member Roger Beymer was ill and missed the meeting.

How lucky can you get? Electrician, Mike Burghardt, who is employed by Square D, Co., recently returned from working on electrical problems at a Naval facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mike, when he had finished with his work, was able to enjoy some free time exploring the waters around the island with our grandson, Jeff. The two had a wonderful time exploring the waters around the island, photographing the colorful fish and enjoyed the thrill of swimming alongside the huge turtles that frequently tagged along close to the two men. There will be an important meeting of the Valley Home MAC this evening, February 1st. Our three new council members, Winnie Mullins, Kate Hart and Chris Hempleman will be sworn in by County District One Supervisor William O'Brien. Heading the list of items to be discussed by the group will be a report on the mold situation discovered at the Valley Home Fire House, which has been the reason behind the closing of our station. Oak Valley Art Society members enjoyed an interesting program at their monthly meeting on Saturday which featured an interesting program by Escalon artist, Dorothy Girling and her husband Bob. Dorothy displayed some of her work and gave suggestions on the use and care of various art mediums. Bob spoke on the best way to ready paintings for hanging, using plastic tubing to cover frame wire to keep from damaging the painting. Dorothy also leads a sketching class one afternoon a week at the Escalon library which has proven very beneficial to those interested in improving their drawing skills.

We have received word that two horses were lost on Friday night right on Valley Home Road near Pleasant Valley Road as a gate was left open. One is a sorrel warm blood and the other is a small bay. Valley Home residents began the New Year by welcoming in the new Superintendent/Principal for Valley Home School, Mrs. Rolanda Desrosiers-Lewis, to replace former Superintendent/Principal, Kevin Hart. The first official day for the new Principal began on Tuesday, January 3, as she welcomed the return of our Valley Home students from winter break. Mrs. Desrosiers-Lewis has the distinction of being the first woman to be placed as superintendent/principal for Valley Home School. A report was received from Claire Taro that their daughter Vickie and son-in-law Leo Albers picked she and Tony up in their pickup on December 9th and drove them to Fernley, Nevada where their granddaughter Kristen and husband Joey Volene live with children 13 year old Rebecca and 11 year old Mathew. On Saturday the group went to a piano recital by their great-granddaughter Rebecca who has been taking piano lessons for a year or so. She has been doing well and her performance of three songs included Skateboard Boogie. Her great-grandparents are so proud of her.

Just a reminder, in case you may have forgotten to check your calendar, Friday, December 16th has been reserved for the Valley Home School Washington DC Fundraiser Drive-Through Chicken Dinner for Four. A dazzling full moon shone brightly across the peaceful little park. The small town Christmas Parade had just ended, its glistening lights now just a beautiful glow against the night skyline.
