After the much-needed rain the Ferry is looking like spring, with the lilacs, wisteria and spiraea blooming, the birds singing and the day-trippers enjoying the town. Last Sunday's breakfast was enjoyed by many, with good food and friendly diners.

The Sandhill Cranes are flying north in impressive numbers. Spring is coming! Also the town is carpeted in violets, remnants of the open water system that provided the town with water. The reservoir was where the upper blacktop area is at the school. It was open and violet seeds spread through town.

At the MAC meeting the rash of burglaries in the area was discussed. There were eight that they knew of. Everyone needs to keep a watch out for anything suspicious and report it to the Sheriff. Also discussed by the California Highway patrolman was the help he was giving the school on safety. Josh Tucker from Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department gave the 2012 statistics for our area. There were 128 calls from Station 2, most medical. Joshua Mann from the County Planning Department gave an update on the Agricultural Plan. Congratulations go out to Amber and Kylea Coston for placing in the top 20 finalists for the Stanislaus County Peace Essay Contest. Amber was in the top 20 for Seventh and Eighth Grade (out of 376) and Kylea was in the top 20 for Fifth and Sixth Grades (out of 317). Their actual placing will be announced in February. Proud Great Grandparents are Bill and Evelyn Frias.

As the first month of 2013 exits, here are some dates for your February calendar: February 3 is Breakfast Sunday in the Ferry at the I.O.O.F. Hall from 8 to noon. February 7 is the dinner meeting of the Knights Ferry Community Club at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse. The main item for discussion is the Spaghetti Dinner, held in conjunction with the Civil War reenactment, on March 23rd. Donations are being sought for raffle prizes. There was a very large turnout for the Feast put on by the Junior High students of Knights Ferry School. The tables were decorated with fall leaf placemats and turkeys and fall trees made of paper bags. Kaeli Sweet and Rilyn Cassaretto liked decorating the tables. Destiny Machado enjoyed preparing the food. Brandi Cardey liked the cooking of the food. Mikali Willis helped Mrs. Brockman organize the dinner. Eden Cassinetto liked decorating with the placemats. Knights Ferry Community Club Christmas dinner is Thursday, Dec. 4th at 6:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. The Oakdale High School Choir will perform again this year. Attendees are asked to bring: A-M- salads and sides and N-Z desserts and sides. The club will furnish ham, turkey, potatoes and gravy. This is always a great way to start the Christmas season!

The 51st annual Pumpkin Roll was sunny after a foggy start. It was fun to see people that used to live in the Ferry bring their children to experience rolling a pumpkin down the street. Winners in each category received a trophy. In the Boys 0-5 years the winner was Ryan Mayer and the Girls 0-5 winner was Rita Taylor with a roll 1 foot, 1 inch from the line. This Friday, October 31st, will be the annual parade of Knights Ferry children going trick-or-treating on Main Street. It will start at 12:15 with the children coming down to Main Street in their costumes. Many folks gather to hand out candy and see the costumes. It is a fun time!
