Knights Ferry News for November 2, 2011

It is with heavy heart that your reporter has to inform you of the passing of two Knights Ferry residents. Linda Gardella Cassinetto died October 25th. She is survived by her husband Ben, children Monica Frere (Lou), Stephen Dietrich and Beth Dietrich and stepchildren Ed (Denise) Cassinetto, Sheryl Cassinetto and partner John and Tom Cassinetto and partner Karen and grandchildren Zack DeGrood, Eden and Benjamin Cassinetto. She is survived by her brother Jack (Trisha) Gardella. Services were held Tuesday. Donations can be made to the Gardella College Fund at the Sonora Area Foundation, P.O. Box 577 Sonora, 95370.

Knights Ferry News for October 26, 2011

Owen Haskell celebrated his 88th birthday with a party in his yard. Beckie, Carey and Linda, former caregivers, came to help Owen celebrate. Also attending were Owen's niece Judy Haskell McCarrick of Grass Valley and her daughter-in-law Jane Overgard, also from Grass Valley. Many other family members and friends gathered for the party for Owen. Dolly Haskell also had an October birthday that the family celebrated. Dolly had celebrated with friends in Scott's Valley earlier in the month. The partygoers enjoyed the delicious lunch and reminiscing with family.

Knights Ferry News for October 19, 2011

Knights Ferry School held their annual Jog-a-Thon last Friday. Fifth through eighth graders ran first, then the Kindergarteners and grades one through four ran. Many parents ran along with their students. Wyatt Sousa enjoyed running the laps. Madison Willis liked reaching her goal for the run. Katie Schwandt enjoyed seeing Sophie Jones, OJHS student who had a furlough day, and Katie enjoyed spilling water on Elise. Elise Seeds liked getting the Popsicles at the end. Luke Dickens just liked running! It was a great day.

Another month has flown by- here are some dates to put on your calendar: October 2nd is Breakfast Sunday in the Ferry and also the town yard sale. The free spaces are on the tennis court and are sure to have something for everyone! The Knights Ferry Community Club meeting is October 6th and is a dinner meeting, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the clubhouse. At the Knights Ferry School board meeting there were a lot of concerned parents attending because of proposed cuts to teacher's salaries and not the administration. The negotiations have been ongoing and nothing is settled. Under action items, the Board approved all. The API score for Knights Ferry was 823. Activities in the future are the Sixth Grade Outdoor Education Camp September 19-23. The annual Jog-a-thon will be October 14th.

As your reporter was typing this column the Borate Bombers, helicopter and spotter plane were flying overhead; the North side of the river, above the Covered Bridge was burning. Jumping into the vehicle, I was off to Frymire Hill for a better view. The flames could be seen past the John Simons home and the Borate Bomber laid a strip of retardant on the hillside. The helicopter dipped water from above the Covered Bridge and doused hot spots. Fire engines could be seen through the smoke crawling over the hills. About 200 acres burned. Thanks firefighters!

Knights Ferry School started the new year with 87 students. Things are moving fast. The 6th Graders will be going to Outdoor Education on September 29-Oct. 3rd. Back to School Night will be Thursday, August 28th with each teacher giving a 25 minute presentation in their classrooms, starting with Kindergarten at 5:30 p.m. then progressing through the grades. The teachers will present their daily routines, rules and information on Common Core. The Knights Ferry School Band will begin September 2nd. There is a new sign up on the highway, a gateway sign for Knights Ferry. It points to the town and tells that there is food and recreation there. Sponsors for the sign so far are: River's Edge, 50's Roadhouse, River Journey, Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates and the Ice Cream and Sweets Shop. It looks really nice.

Kaeli Sweet flew to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to visit her Uncle Adam and Aunt Tiffany. Hurricane Arthur, the first named storm of the season, went up the Atlantic seaboard also. We have to wait until Kaeli is home to find out how that experience was.

Stanislaus of Public Works has CHANGED THE DATES of the slurry seal on the town's streets. New dates are July 7-8-9. The streets are to be sealed in the order as before, Monday-Dent past Vantine and Vantine and Main Street. Tuesday-Lynde, Shurl, Dean and the rest of Dent, Wednesday-Ellen and by the Plaza to Cemetery road. No cars or pedestrians are to be on the sealing job for two hours afterwards. Plan your day accordingly.

At the MAC meeting to be held Thursday, June 26th, the slurry seal of all the streets in the Ferry will be discussed. The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. The sealing of the streets will be July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. There will be no cars or pedestrians allowed on the seal for two hours. The first streets to be done are Dent past Vantine and Vantine and Main Street on the 1st. The next day will be Lynde, Shurl, Dean and the rest of Dent.
